Is it bad if a school knows that you are applying to a lot of schools(like 30+). I think I once heard an ADCOM say that if you apply to more than 15 schools, then there's no reason to believe that you are interested in theres.

I don't know about being bad but I have had this questions in all my interviews except at Case .......they all wanted to know where else I have applied... I always answered that all in-state plus a few along the est coast where my family is scattered and a couple onthe west coast near my family as well.........so I tied the answers to my family, which is true BTW......plus at UNC I told them that it was my #1 choice and if I get in here I will cancel all my interviews after that...and I am keeping my word...

Plus they only know for sure where else you have been ACCEPTED but they can't know without you telling them where you have APPLIED.....

the thing is that if a school knows that you applied to a lot of other places, then it shows no specific interest in there school. I know that, ideally, it shouldn't matter. But when schools are looking to fill up their class, this may be a red mark on people who applied to a lot of places.

Which is why you don't tell them how many schools you applied to. You keep it general. Like CanIMakeIt said, you tell them about all the in-state schools, and that there are some schools in some other geographic area(s) (this could translate to 10-50 schools depending on how you classify the word "some" 🙂 . Take the cue from Bush and Kerry, and speak in general terms.
