Hi all, hope you are well,

I was wondering if I could have help finalizing my school list. My goal is to get into at least one MD program. If that falls through, I hope to get into a DO program, but leaving options open for specialization with an MD is obviously ideal. Here are my stats, thank you!

  1. MCAT: 513--128/127/130/128
  2. cGPA: 3.78, sGPA: 3.72
  3. NY resident (US green card holder and Canadian citizen)
  4. Asian (Bangladeshi) male
  5. University of Toronto
  6. Clinical: 550 hours, 250 more anticipated
    1. 300 EMT hours
    2. 250 hours paid hospital internship
  7. Research: 150 hours, 1 publication in prep
    1. 50 hours in an organic chemistry lab
    2. 100 hours with a molecular biology lab (publication)
  8. Shadowing: 150 hours
    1. 75 hours with pediatrician
    2. 75 hours with family medicine
  9. Nonclinical volunteering: 35 hours, 400 more anticipated
    1. 35 hours with child bereavement
    2. 400 hours with help text line
  10. Other EC's: job on campus (100 hours), competitive trading card gameplay and youtube channel (600 hours), captain of intramural team in first semester (50 hours), MSA (100 hours), Junior executive position in Biomedical engineering club, first semester (50 hours)
  11. Currently in second semester of 3rd year (took a gap last semester to finish MCAT and rack up clinical experience hours)
  12. Sending applications in this June
Again, I would really just like to get into an MD school, so please let me know if I should add to or remove from my list. Thanks again!

What does your 400 hours of help text line involve?
As of now it’s anticipatory (though I’ve completed the 10 hour training) and will involve volunteering with a crisis help group to provide mental health support and crisis intervention

With fewer than 150 hours of service orientation activities (food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation), your application may be screened out at most schools. I'm not sure what you are doing with child bereavement to think it could qualify (though it is useful). I would rather you switch your efforts to do more of it rather than crisis hotline work, but I'm guessing your schedule limits your options. I presume you have been trained with your bereavement activity before working?

Yes, that's certainly an issue. I will try my absolute best to rack up the hours with the crisis text line by practically treating it like a 9-5. Hopefully that makes the change, volunteering is really something that I feel like I struggled with during these three years. Outside of that, do you recommend I do anything else to increase hours? I really do still want to apply and get in this summer. Also, would this affect my DO apps as well?

Projected hours have no value so you only have 35 hours of non clinical volunteering and many schools screen at 150 hours. You should accumulate 120+ hours at the crisis text line before you submit your application. Schools such as Rush and Loyola are looking for applicants with many hundreds or thousands of hours of non clinical volunteering. I suggest these MD schools if you accumulate those hours:
All 4 SUNYs
Albany
New York Medical College
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Hackensack
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Geisinger
George Washington
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
Wake Forest
Methodist (when it opens)
NOVA MD
Belmont
Alice Walton
Roseman
TCU
Ponce (St. Louis)
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State

The problem is crisis hotline is not in person, so that holds less weight compared to in person counseling as a shelter volunteer or school counselor (not teacher). Basically you are still at zero.

Get child grief counseling up, at least to 50 hours before submission. This is where you should put energy vs holiness. Balance hours with hotline work.
