MI resident, ORM, traditional applicant (graduating senior, taking a gap year)

Non-clinical volunteering (over 1 year or more):
- 60 hrs at soup kitchen serving meals to guests. Also involved in a student org on campus that collects unused food from dining halls and donate to the nonprofit running the soup kitchen

-80 hrs crisis line for at-risk teens
-50 hrs for an after school program for children experiencing homelessness

Teaching/Leadership:

Miscellaneous:
- Play a sport recreationally; officer of the sports club.
- Relatively light yet still meaningful involvement in an ethnic student organization that is not my own ethnicity
-Gap year plan: a study/service abroad program

I'm aware that my app is rather service-heavy and thus would not try to target research-oriented schools. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have any regional preference? You should apply to all your Michigan schools: U Michigan, Michigan State, Wayne State, Central Michigan, Oakland Beaumont and Western Michigan. Then you can add any OOS schools that appeal to you but avoid state public schools that accept few non residents.

Yes I plan on applying to all Michigan schools. If not in-state I prefer schools in the Midwest or any of the top schools. However I’m not sure which OOS schools may be good for me to add.

Current list:
UMich
Wayne State
MSU
CMU
OUWB
CWRU
UCinci
OSU
Toledo
Northwestern
UChicago
Penn State

You are too modest. Looking at the whole picture, you can go where you want. Apply to not more than 20 beause your travel schedule from September through October is going to be insane and you can't say no until you have an offer. Brace yourself but don't be cocky.

Wow, I am very flattered to hear that from you! I never considered myself as a competitive candidate because unlike most traditional students I did not intend to go into medicine when I started college. I only got involved in my current research because I became curious about addiction liability when I worked with people with addiction at the shelters. (I originally wanted to go into social work, still do if medicine doesn't work out.)

Yes I will be flying six hours to get back to States... yikes.

Brace yourself but don't be cocky.
For sure! I am excited to be writing about my experiences with confidence and passion.

Thank you very much and good night :)

On a side note the "study and service aboard" program is Fulbright ETA if that makes any major difference.

Solid stats and very competitive overall. Listen to the folks that provided schools; they know what they're talking about. Best of luck to you!

Hi, I just stumbled across your thread and I noticed that you volunteered at an Ann Arbor hospice. Do you mind sharing where you worked? I've been thinking about volunteering at a hospice this fall but I'm not sure if it's better than just staying at UMHS, since the hospices all seem pretty far from campus. And good luck on your cycle! You shouldn't have many problems.
