Hi everyone! I am applying to MD PhD programs this cycle and I would really appreciate some advice on my list of schools. I am not really sure how many programs I should apply to but I am aiming for 18-20ish. My stats are as follows:

GPA: 3.96 in chemical engineering
MCAT: 521 (132/130/131/128)
Research Experience: Internship, senior thesis, full-time research associate ~ 5000 hrs
Publications: Two in preparation, one presentation at a conference, multiple poster presentations
Work Abroad: 3 months in the Himalayas working to improve water quality/ reduce waterborne diseases; presented results at a national conference
Volunteering: Clinical- 180 hrs; Tutoring- 150 hrs
Varsity Athlete: 4 years, senior captain, national qualifier
Campus Involvement: 3 years as a tour guide
Other: LGBTQ+ applicant, ORM, male, Massachusetts resident

Right now I have:

Boston University
Case Western
Columbia
Duke
Emory
Harvard
Hopkins
NYU
Northwestern
Upenn
Stanford
Tufts
UCLA
UCSD
UCSF
UChicago
University of Colorado
Umass med
Michigan
UNC
University of Washington
Vanderbilt
WashU
Cornell
Yale

I realize that most of these are reaches, so I am guessing I should cut out a bunch and then add a couple of lower tier schools. I also am not sure if I should remove BU simply because it is not an MSTP funded program. Anyway, I would really appreciate any advice!

Research interests?
I mean I personally wouldn’t apply BU unless I had a super compelling reason as your stats are very competitive and BU doesn’t provide a stipend during Md years (bigger issue than not being mstp, imo).

I didn’t realize that about BU funding. Thanks, good to know! Also, I have done research in proteomics, nanomaterials, and drug delivery. I enjoyed all of these experiences but I am also open to doing something new in bioengineering/science during the PhD.
