Hello! I'm new to SDN, apologies if I forget to include anything. Looking for advice on my school list. I'm looking for community-based schools with heavy emphasis on underserved populations, as that is where most of my interests are. But I also understand that with my GPA, I may just be looking to get accepted anywhere. Thank you!!
cGPA: 3.42
sGPA: 3.35
Pretty strong upward trend. Finished out my first semester with a 2.3 due to heavy personal circumstances (not to mention it was Fall 2020), and worked to bring it up since then.
MCAT: 519 (130, 129, 128, 132)
Female, white, Chemistry major at a T20, 3 gap years.
Paid Clinical Work: 2000 hrs as PCT on Med-Surg floor.
300 hrs as a newborn hearing screener in NICU
Clinical Volunteering: 400 hrs as MA at free clinic for uninsured patients. Mainly unhoused/undocumented.
Non-clinical Volunteering:
~ 500 hrs as an organizer for a local mutual aid group. Hard to estimate hours because I've been involved for about 5 years and I wasn't "premed" for most of that time, so I wasn't really keeping track. Distributed meals and supplied to unhoused folks, cleaned up encampments, made people feel heard.
200 hrs organizing volunteer trip focused on refugee resettlement (university club)
100 hrs emergency weather shelter volunteer
30 hrs (just started involvement but projecting a few hundred more in the coming years) community volunteer with local immigrants rights coalition. Providing financial/emotional/administrative support to immigrant families facing crisis. Also serving as the volunteer coordinator for this organization.
Shadowing:
40 hrs with DO hospitalist that I worked with as a PCT
20 hrs with family med
Research:
1500 hrs as veterinary pathology research assistant, working with canine and feline treatment resistant lymphomas. Will be on 3 pubs (not first author).
1 published case study on Primary Aldosteronism with physician I shadowed
Miscellaneous:
Play bass in a local band (I'm from a live-music heavy town!). Most of our shows are benefits for local orgs, and I have put together many of these benefit shows myself.
Probably 4000+ hrs of non-clinical work. Mostly serving in restaurants and working as a florist.
Was pretty involved with Students for Socialism during undergrad. Not sure if that is something I should include lol.
