First time poster here! I'm a low stat applicant that's already applied to DO schools, but wanted feedback on my MD school list.
1. cGPA/sGPA: 3.47/3.30 (significant upward trend, and includes a 4.0 post-bacc of 24 credits)
2. MCAT: 513 (128/126/130/129)
3. TX resident
4. ORM
6. Clinical Experience (only hospital volunteering) : 600 hours
7. Research (no publication): 120 hours
8. Shadowing:
  • Internal Medicine - 100 hours
  • Gastroenterology - 50 hours
9. Non-clinical volunteering:
  • Homeless shelter volunteer: 60 hours
  • Maternal health program volunteer: 75 hours
  • Food Bank volunteer: 20 hours
  • Crisis Text Line volunteer: 200 hours
10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
  • Big Brother Big Sister (15 hours): I mentor a high schooler, advising him on a weekly basis (although the program is paused for the summer)
  • Flyer Distribution (20 hours): Some of my fellow hospital volunteers and I have worked together to make a flyer that would help patients prevent falls in their own homes. We've managed to get it distributed in multiple free clinics around the city, and are working to expand to other areas of Texas.
11. No honors or awards
MD School List (excluding TX MD schools which I already applied to):
Quinnipiac
Vermont-Larner
University of Illinois
Virginia Tech Carilion
TCU-Burnett
Toledo
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Eastern Virginia
St. Louis
MC Wisconsin
West Virginia
Geisinger Commonwealth
Boston University
Wayne State
Drexel

Sorry for the long post. I've heard TX residents struggle with OOS MD schools, but with my stats I kinda wanted to apply as broadly as possible. As far as my list goes, do y'all have any recommendations or is there anything I should take out? Thanks for the help!

Yeah, it'll be tough because Texas schools are so affordable for in-state candidates. Many OOS schools will have the perception that you won't attend. Try looking at MSAR, specifically the applicant data section for schools in your MCAT range and seeing which ones are interviewing lots of out of state applicants. At a glance, your list looks like a good place to start, but I'd cut BU and Drexel (personal preferences).

Welcome to the forums.

I disregard activities with fewer than 50 hours, unless it's volunteering. You have 135 hours of service orientation activities, which is just lower than 150 hours that you need to avoid getting screened out at most schools. Crisis text line is not in-person, so ti doesn't count.
