Hello! I am submitting my AMCAS application today and am hoping to get some feedback on my school list. Here is my info:
  1. cGPA ~ 3.8, sGPA ~ 3.95 (4.0 in post-bacc coursework)
  2. 522 (131/132/130/129)
  3. Utah resident for the last 4 years, but I lived and went to school in California until the age of 22.
  4. White/ Eastern European
  5. UC Berkeley undergrad, University of Utah post-bacc
  6. 1 year working full-time as a medical assistant. 6 months volunteering as a Spanish interpreter at a free clinic. 2 winter seasons as a front desk clerk at a ski clinic
  7. 1 year of part-time undergraduate research at a cognitive science lab at UC Berkeley. 1 year of part-time paid research at a neuroscience lab at the University of Washington. No publications.
  8. ~45 hours of shadowing. Specialties: Radiation Oncology, ED, and Family Medicine
  9. Volunteering experience: community gardening, reading tutor for kids, leadership position at UC Berkeley's Public Service Center
  10. Other ECs: TA for O Chem, biking/ running races, environmental advocacy, ski instructor
  11. No specific honors/ awards
  12. I studied Computer Science at Berkeley. Before I decided to go down the med school path, I worked as a software engineer for 2 years at a software company called Palantir.
I am not sure what I want to specialize in, yet. I do know that I'm interested in working with underserved populations and thinking about improving public health outcomes in communities. I am also (potentially) interested in practicing medicine in rural settings. More selfishly, I'd like to go to school somewhere with good outdoor access, if possible, as my hobbies include: running, biking, skiing, climbing.

Here is what I'm thinking for my school list:
- Dartmouth
- George Washington
- Temple
- Northwestern
- OHSU
- UPenn
- Vermont
- RUSH
- University of Utah
- Brown
- UC Davis
- UCSF
- UChicago
- UMichigan
- UWisconsin

I'd love to add University of Washington, but I'm thinking my odds are probably too low for it to be worth it.

Thanks so much in advance for any feedback!

OHSU and U Washington admit few non residents with no connection to the state. UC Davis admits only 3 to 4 non residents per year. Rush is looking for applicants with many hundreds or thousands of hours of non clinical volunteering. I suggest these schools with your stats:
Utah
UCSF
Kaiser
Washington University (in St. Louis-almost a guaranteed interview with your stats)
Carle Illinois
Northwestern
U Chicago
U Michigan
Case Western
Cincinnati
Vanderbilt
Emory
USF Morsani
Duke
Jefferson
Pittsburgh
U Penn
John Hopkins
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
NYU
Columbia
Cornell
Rochester
Harvard
Dartmouth
Brown
Yale
Boston University
Tufts
Colorado
Mayo

Thank you so much!

So the consensus is that UC Davis cares significantly more about being a current resident of CA than having ties to CA? Would my entire childhood + undergrad years in California not help?

And that's good to know about RUSH. I have ~400 non-clinical if you include tutoring/ mentoring, but that's probably not enough.

Why not George Washington? I really like their mission and it would be interesting to be near policy-making happening around healthcare.

The few non residents that UC Davis admits probably attended the undergraduate school or grew up in that area. You could add George Washington.

Alright, maybe I'll skip that secondary and save some money. Thank you!
