Hello, I am currently applying to medical schools and I am anticipating that I will need to re-apply this coming cycle! I was hoping to get some advise on my school list.
Stats and information about me
GPA: 3.83
MCAT: 513
Oregon resident, 24 year old, male, ORM, first-generation college graduate with human physiology degree and a minor in chemistry.
Activities
Work
Clinical paid: 2200 hours of emergency department scribing (5 hospitals: urban trauma I with stroke and STEMI certifications, suburban, and pediatrics)
Non-clinical work: 1000 hours of pre-school teaching throughout summer's of college with some ongoing work with this group for both maintence and creative projects (graphic design mostly)
Volunteering
Non-clinical volunteering: 150 hours of volunteering with local homeless shelters, 75 hours of volunteering through college club involvement (food pantries, blanket making for post operative children, cooperative farms, and with cancer foundation)
Clinical volunteering: 100 hours of volunteer scribing at a free clinic.
Research
Research non-paid: 1000 hours of undergraduate chemistry/physics research on grinding coffee (weird I know)
Two open access publications both from the same lab: third author publication in Matter IF of 15, fourth auther publication in Nature Communications IF 15
One poster presentation at a conference.
Shadowing
50 hours of in person shadowing with addiction medicine, trauma/general surgery, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, primary care, and in the neuro/trauma/ICU. Have been able to watch multiple proceedures, follow-up care, and been to the OR for a BKA.
Leadership:
100 hours of scribe training in both the emergency department and free clinic
100 hours of college club leadership (organizing service at food pantries and fundraising for cleft pallate surgeries)
Awards:
Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude, honors thesis award, graduate honors college, scholastic national gold key in photography, triple varsity athletics, 9 time dean's list recipient
listed: wood working and backpacking.
What I changed in the last year
added 1200 hours of scribing, 50 hours of shadowing, 200 hours of volunteering, and 100 hours of scribe training. Second publication (the one listed in Nature Communications above) was accepted. Basically did the same stuff I was doing last year and added a few more things! Does this show enough growth?
School list from last year (off the top of the head--could be missing one or two)
This cycle I had two interviews: oregon health and science university (in-state) and wake forest. WL at Wake Forest and application still on hold at OHSU.
