any help appreciated! thanks a lottt

GPA: Both by cGPA and sGPA were about 3.9, math major. One withdrawal on my transcript freshmen year, but it was a upper level class very very few premeds would take
MCAT: 505, considering retake next cycle to get closer to a 510
State: FL, no out of state connections
URM/ORM: Black female, low income
Clinical Experience: ~200 hours volunteering for end of life patients at a hospice. 20 hours shadowing at a free clinic
Research Experience:
  • Mathematics research related to health outcomes, presented at a conference, but only did the research for a semester, about ~150 hours
  • Another poster presentation on health outcomes, also for a semester
  • Paid research assistant in a social science for two years, 6-10 hours a week. No poster.
  • International summer research, one summer research at a prestigious university. Both with poster. Unsure how much schools would care. No publications for any research
ECS/Extra
  • University tutor 3 years, assistant for a class 1 year. I worked around 25 to 28 hours a week total
  • ~100 hours helping international students, ~150 helping non-native English speakers outside the university improve at the language.
  • Premed summer program
  • Participation in a university research program, one year
  • A tuition scholarship and another community based scholarship

Self assessed detriments of my app; Clinical hours, lack of pubs, no club participation or leadership

Schools I am considering: UCF, FSU, UFL. Making my super reach school either Yale, Cornell, or Columbia. Uninterested in regions outside the South or Northeast unless there's potential for good aid.

What extra schools would you suggest? In the event I am a reapplicant with a 510, what extra schools would you suggest in that case, if it's not a bother? Thanks!

EDIT: Just realized I should probably be more specific about my hours for my other jobs
Tutoring was 10-15, LA was 10 hours

This cycle! But since my MCAT is not competitive, needing to reapply isn't unlikely

Ty for the advice. Dartmouth/Brown are slightly more in the realm of possibility than Columbia 😂 but my motivation for my extreme reaches has more to do with the aid I'd be guaranteed on acceptance since I'm LI. I will be looking at all the schools you listed!

Have you reached out to SNMA chapter officers at the schools on your list? What summer premed program were you part of? What community service have you done?
shpep. Did not know of SNMA before today. What would be the benefit of reaching out?

Sorry for confusion, my service hours were the ~250 hours I had volunteering with international students and residents, both since second year

As you probably know through SHPEP, the % of African-American physicians is much lower than the population it represents, and if you get into medical school, the SNMA/NMA will forever be your collegial lifeline. You should meet the people who will help you succeed as much as they can. Many SHPEP alumni are part of SNMA and NMA.

On community service, do you have service orientation activities: food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation?

Also, unless legal says one cannot give scholarships for URM's, you would be surprised. Back to the SNMA/NMA networking... many of these students or alumni or faculty know which schools may have better financial aid packages given your low SES/income. Some may be in the South as they like to keep people in the state. However, I totally understand if you have other concerns that exclude the South.

Admittedly, all my service hours are with international students & recent immigrants trying to improve their English. Now that it's been pointed out, my service hours aren't very diversified! My service hours have a stronger mentor aspect to them.

I am very interested in minimizing debt because my parents can't help me out financially at all. I'll look into it!

It is unlikely you will need to reapply with your stats. The GPA-MCAT grid for Black applicants with your stats shows you have a greater than 90% chance for a MD acceptance.
