Applying this cycle, need advice for list

VA Resident
Undergrad GPA: 3.66
DAT: AA-20 TS-20 PAT-19

1. VCU
2. Maryland
3. Pittsburgh
4. Temple
5. Louisville
6. Nova
7. LECOM
8. Tufts
9. Boston
 
Seems good to me.. competitive at those schools for sure.

I would add Ohio State for sure. Perhaps Kentucky as well. If you are interested in a west coast option I would recommend Midwestern-AZ.

Hmmm okay I'll keep those in mind! I actually never even gave Kentucky a thought.

Do you know anything about Midwestern-IL?
 
Apply to more than 9 schools.

Have you looked at any West Coast schools? U-dub, UCLA, UCSF, USC, UNLV, Midwestern AZ, ASDOH, Utah, Roseman?

Edit: just realized that the last 5 are "desert" states and not actually west coast but I'm assuming OP gets the idea 😛
 
So, I just got told in another thread that the University of Colorado is not OOS friendly, but I consider it to be so I'm going to suggest it anyway (especially since the post above is suggesting UW which is extremely not OOS friendly and nobody jumped all over them about it).

Preaching to the choir. I completely agree with that. Especially if the school culture and environment mesh well with your personal lifestyle. I honestly couldn't see myself at any other school than the one I'm at and I don't think people should rule things out just because it is somewhat unfavorable.

Lol sorry for seeming like I "jumped all over you". That wasn't my intention at all. I definitely think it's still a good idea to apply to some of those schools if you really would like to go there and have something about your application that stands out. Heck, I did and I received interviews to some of them. I was just speaking as a generalization. But I agree, UW is extremely OOS unfriendly.
 
USC is a great OOS option. UW/Colorado-don't waste your time/money.

Do you think 9 isn't enough? But I definitely am interested in west coast schools. I think I'd love to live out there but I just thought they wouldn't give a VA kid a fighting chance to be honest.
 
Do this...and you'll get in somewhere. Trust me.

Apply to every skool in your state of residency. Then only apply to private skools outside of that because they do not favor in-state applicants; public skools favor in-state applicants. Yours scores are good, but it's possible they will look you over for someone in state. But don't even trip you're going to get in somewhere.


PS. I hope you have enough shadow hours, great LORs from dentists, and a bomb Personal Statement. But you already handled the hard part. Just going to give you an early congrats big shot. 😀
 
I got into USC and Meharry, both are private skools. Florida is my state of residency and it only has one public dental skool, UF. Did not get in, so Im choosing USC. It's expensive af....but it's USC. They are unorthodox when it comes to their interview process and curriculum but they are bomb when it comes to hand skills and clinicals.

This is not good advice. It is not so black and white, so I think it is a good idea to have a mix of public and private. I applied to 8 public schools and 8 private schools. I received 7 interviews to public schools and 1 interview to a private school. This is just a sample size of 1, but it shows that it's definitely a good idea to have a mix.

How many acceptances you receive overall? Because that's all that really matters.

ehh Op's stat's are pretty average (among accepted students anyway). If I were in his shoes I would apply more broadly.

Broadly as in higher number of schools or spread out over public and private?

I was just thinking numbers in general to boost percent chance. If you're URM or something then dw about it

black/latino/native american. You can look past it, but depending on if you are or not, you can save money on your applications. There's not as much affirmative action in dental than med but there's definitely a good amount.

I'm going to an OOS public school and I'd defintely reccomend picking smart ones to apply to
