Hey everyone!
Getting ready to submit my AMCAS by the end of this week and thought it would be a good idea to get input on my school list since this forum has been helpful for me in the past. If you have any additions or removals I would love to hear them!
Here is some quick background about my stats going into last app cycle (2016):
Graduated in 2014 with 3.38 cGPA, 3.2 sGPA MCAT was 507
ECs:
**2 years full-time as a scribe after graduation. After about 6 months I was promoted to "head scribe" and managed around 35 other scribes, then was promoted to a project leader and implemented a new scribe program. I have about 2500 hours of clinical "shadowing" experience doing this.
**2 month international mission trip to a medical clinic -- had some hands on experience in the lab and with patients
**another international mission trip for 1 week helping with documentation through a pediatric organization who partnered with my scribe company
**Volunteered about 5 hours a week in a free clinic during college.
**Elected and served on my college's Honor Council.
**Many other volunteer experiences (working with girl scouts and leading spring break trips to volunteer at a camp for adults with disabilities, etc).
Since my unsuccessful cycle:
SMP at Cinci completed with a GPA of 3.96 and an award for getting the highest combined grade in medical school classes. This was while working part time for 7 hours a week as an online scribe instructor, shadowing intermittently and community volunteering (GED tutor and foodbank volunteer). Planning to retake the MCAT in July and my scores have already been much higher, but I won't retake unless I'm at or above 512 consistently on practice tests. I also retook a chemistry lab I had a C- in, getting an A (this was mostly because it excluded me from applying to some schools).
Of note, I'm a first generation college student and Cuban (which I know is not technically URM, but do think it gives me interesting cultural background).
So here is my list: (I'm a reapplicant at the **)
Albany
Eastern Virginia Medical School
Indiana University
Temple
Loyola
Michigan State
New York Medical College
Northeast Ohio Med
Quinnipac
**Rosalind Franklin
Rush
St. Louis University
Thomas Jefferson
Ohio State
University of Toledo
**Tulane
UC Davis (I know this is a stretch but I grew up in California and feel that I fit their mission)
University of Cincinnati
**VCU
Western Michigan (Stryker)
Wright State
It includes all Ohio schools except for Case, since I am now an Ohio resident. Also will be applying to around 5 DO schools.
