Why is it important to reach out to schools' admissions staff? I had thought others on SDN basically said it wasn't worth a lot, considering the sheer volume of students that would reach out to the admissions team. Wouldn't that be more important after you were offered a II? Also, how would networking with current students affect the process?

It may not be worth a lot when it comes to moving your file forward, but you also overestimate the number of students who sincerely reach out to the admissions team. I would always network with current students because you want their perspective on what it's like to be a student beyond the marketing materials, and they'll be people you will rely on as a community.
