Hey all! I'm thinking my clinical hours are lacking. I believe my strength is in my leadership positions. Afterschool program described below started during position as Chem Club Comm. Service Chair. I'm asking for help in identifying my weaknesses (nice to have another set of eyes check this out) and narrowing down my school list!
Biochemistry Major. CA resident. Applying June 2012
cGPA: 3.75
sGPA: 3.73
MCAT: 36R
Leadership/Similar activities:
1 year Chem Club Community Service Chair
1 year Chem Club VP
2 years Pre-Dental Club Co-Pres (2 year position, elected end of Freshman year, switched to premed that summer)
2 fall semesters Honors Freshman Student Academic Advisor
1 year Pre-Health Peer Advisor
1 year OChem TA
1 year OChem Tutor
Clinical Hours:
105 hours volunteer in transplant unit (August 2010 - April 2011)
48 hours physician shadowing
48 hours dentist shadowing (fully investigated career in dentistry)
4 trips (10 hours each) to medical/dental clinic in Tijuana
Non-clinical Hours (I organized the following events through leadership in Chem Club):
- 8 public chemistry presentations (~40 hours in planning/participating total)
- Started a science education afterschool program that visits local elementary/middle schools in an underprivileged neighborhood to encourage youth interest in the sciences (active program for 3 semesters by application) (~30 hours planning/participating total, not including time spent organizing program)
Research:
1 year organic synthesis at local biological sciences institute. 1 Presentation and Honors Thesis as a result (probably doesn't matter because no pub)
Other Info:
Member - American Chemical Society
Hobbies - cooking, cycling, guitar, piano
School List:
Pritzker, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Michigan, Northwestern, UCSF, Stanford, Dartmouth, UCLA, Case Western, Duke, Baylor, UCSD, Mayo, St. Louis, Brown, NYU, Emory, Ohio State, Georgetown, UCI, Loyola, USC (Keck), Temple, GWU, Wake Forest, OHSU.
Input is greatly appreciated!
