does school name matter? to become a general dentist and specialist?

From what I've heard, no it does not matter. Patients not gonna care about that.
However, if you wanna specialize later, residency programs will look at the school you graduated from, they mostly prefer well established school as compared to new schools.

Some schools are easier to specialize from, but if you're a competitive enough applicant you can specialize from anywhere. To become a general dentist I'd say it doesn't matter at all, the only variation is going to be in the quality of your clinical preparation.

Exactly. But many dentists will be busily making money to start a family and pay back loans and hardly have a chance to go back to school. Dentistry is quite a short-lived career. Just do it and don't think too much.

The only thing that matters after graduation is your ability to produce and build a good reputation with patients and other dentists. An office I used to work for hired a Columbia graduate only to fire them 2 months after because they just didn't have the skills. And by skills I mean keeping up with the patient load. Ivey's, however, are great if you want to specialize.

so when ppl say certain dental school has very good clinics experiences how do they know? or how do we, as a pre-dental, evaluate that the school have good quality clinics? school websites only tells curriculum and not whats the requirement for the clinics portion.

on sdn i see new schools like mwu, lecom, western, and touro gets criticism. are there reason whys?
i have deposit few of those and bit scary because ppl telling me they are not good clincs school, and no chance for specialty which i want to keep my options open.

and what is the limit of debt when we should re-consider dentistry once more? 200k? 250?300k?

generally all dental schools will give you the skills you need to succeed as a dentist.
new schools like midwestern, lecom, touro, and western get criticism for being new and overpriced, but i'm sure graduates can do well from their programs too.
people also criticize them because they fear that dentistry will get more oversaturated with the openings of new schools.
in the end nobody will care if you graduated from harvard or midwestern, have you ever asked your dentist (not the one you shadowed) where he graduated from? me neither.

I know a few dentist in my home town who advertise being USC grads from dental school. They seem to get more patients because of southern California's love of USC despite knowing nothing about the quality of education.

That seems to be a rare situation.

i think you only learn so much from an institution. there will be bad and good professor. its up to student how much knowledge they will be able to acquire. i think practice makes perfect especially dentist. you can go to harvard and columbia and still be crappy dentist. school name is for the brand and only benefits school not the students.

just wondering. there are bunch of new schools like roseman, utah, western, mwu-il, lecom. do guys know why out all of those school why people talk down on lecom especially?
