now that it is getting closer to step 1 prep time, i was how you guys are splitting time between step studying and actual school material. we're in our last block and a lot of the material being taught in this block like nutrition and geriatrics doesn't seem like high yield step 1 material which is why i'm getting antsy about which I should concentrate on.

Nutrition is actually pretty good stuff -- especially the symptoms of the various vitamins in overdose and deficiency. I say definitely focus on your coursework, and if you have a bit of extra time to spend on Step 1..that's probably fine. If it were me, I would probably spend that extra time doing something fun, though. I didn't do any boards prep while I was still in classes, and it worked out well for me - but I have certainly heard reasonable arguments on both sides.

School study. You can't review later what you're not learning now. Seriously though, 2-5 weeks of focused study for Step 1 is really all you need. Good luck.

The closer it gets to the step, the more I use board review materials to study for class stuff. I'm using less of our class PowerPoints and more Goljan lectures (he has good nutrition lectures btw) and RR for path, RR for psych and biostats, etc.

When I get bored with that, I read a little kaplan biochem (cause I'm weak there) and flip through some old path flashcards to refresh my memory.

Don't you have to pass your classes to take Step 1? I think that is your answer.

im starting with reviewing the phys of each path system when we start, and doing 25 random q's a day. I'll let you now how it works out 😛

I agree that you can't review what you haven't learned. But, you can add on to your school material as other posters suggested.

We're on renal now for example, so while I study the stuff for class I'm also reviewing physio with BRS, and looking at the corresponding chapters in FA, RR, and Robbins.

Before your exam (or after you have some knowledge base AND provided that you have the time) you can do questions from Robbins QBook, webpath, Qbank, etc. That's what I'm trying to do. Sometimes I have the extra time (because I don't go to class), and sometimes I don't.

I'm not really stressing too much about it, but I figure that with repetition ad-nauseum I can work on my weak areas and hopefully it'll get easier when I get to the "step 1-only review time".

As far as nutrition goes, I would definitely read on vitamins and corresponding deficiencies. Better safe than sorry!
