Hey guys,

Lost as to what school I want to apply to and looking for any advice. Going to be applying for this upcoming cycle and would love to nail down some sort of list of schools.

Major: B.S. Dual major biomed and neuroscience w/honors
GPA: 3.79 (sGPA pretty much same)
MCAT: Haven't taken it yet but anticipate 505-510 from practice exams
Demographics: NH resident male

EC/Work:
1.5 years in a neuroscience research lab
0.5 year in a microbiology research lab
Volunteer advanced EMT for ~3 years (about 3000hrs and 500 calls)
In the works of getting my paramedic certification
~100 hrs non clinical community service
Phi Sigma and Alpha Epsilon Delta member
Sailing Team
Swing dance member

I don't really have substantial shadowing experience (<10hrs) but I interact with physicians frequently through my EMS experience. Should I put more time into shadowing? Thanks for any input!

About the shadowing thing, yes definitely get more hours. Interacting with doctors isn't the same as watching them work. Patients also interact with doctors lol. I'm in process of getting more myself and it's really cool if you do a variety of areas as it gives you a sense of what you might like (even though I hear once you do rotations in med school that'll probably change).

Do you have the MSAR? If not buy it and start using it. Although it will be next to impossible to come up with a good list without the MCAT. But you can look at OOS stats, GPA info etc..

You do need some shadowing. What do you do as an advanced EMT? Any patient interaction in hospitals or medical sites? What does the 100 hours of non clinical work entail?

Thanks for the advice, I don't have the MSAR but I'll definitely look into it. There are three levels of healthcare providers in the pre hospital setting (EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic), What you can do varies state to state but in general being an advanced EMT allows me to do procedures considered "advanced life support", more invasive procedures, more medications, IV/IO, etc. I continually bring patients to hospitals and interact with them every time I go out on a call, is that what you mean?. And the non clinical work is stuff like volunteering at races, tutoring biology to undergrads, and food drives.

It's definitely great that you do all that, but I meant you should probably follow a doctor around and see exactly what they do. From what I've learned on here interacting with doctors is not the same as shadowing them. You have great clinical experience from the sound of it but you need to see exactly what a doctor specifically does and the best way to do that is follow them around all day.

Sorry about the bold and italics lol on my phone and couldn't get it to undo.

Come back when you have an MCAT score, and then we can advise.
