I was shadowing my optometrist a few days ago and he mentioned to me that some schools, specifically Northeastern State in Oklahoma, don't even look at applicants unless they are from the state or states close by. Well I'm in Virginia, so that would be a waste of an application.

Is this true? If so, do you guys know if any other schools are known for doing this?

I suppose I just don't want to waste my time applying and sending my OAT scores in to any schools like this.

Thanks for the help!

I believe Northeastern is the only one. I'm in Virginia as well so I definitely tried to take note of any other schools that did that. however, some schools might prefer instate students for whatever reason. I think Alabama does that.

The OK school is the only one that does that officially.

That's discrimination, bordering racism.

What if another school was to make their policy something like "we only accept/admit students from the middle east"

How does that have anything to do with racism? Now Affirmative Action, that's legalized racism 🙂

In any case, most schools discriminate (out of state tuitions).

They just want students that are local and will stay local and give back to the community they were educated in. At least I believe that is their viewpoint.

Really?

It is the exact same as a school that offers a scholarship for students from a certain state or disadvantaged background. Or schools that have different tuition for in-state vs. out. Call them up and ask why they only accept from certain states. I almost guarantee they'll say something about contracts with those states.

What I meant to say was if discrimination is allowed, why not racism too?

Is it really that different!?

The OK school accepts students from all states (9 for the previous year) which is pretty good for such a small class size.
Michigan and Berkeley have much more restrictive numbers.

Remember, many schools get financial assistance from their state govt, and it may may be directly or indirectly tied to providing educational spots for its citizens.

Also, schools are naturally going to get more applications from those living close by.

Bottom line: Apply anywhere you like, but be aware of these biases f you want to increase your odds of getting in somewhere.
