Schools Denied by ACPE??

Has ACPE ever denied the accreditation of any pharmacy schools yet besides the old story of hawaii?
Just wondering... a lot of new schools are popping up in 2008. Will most of them be acredited?

some one on this forum was telling me that he/she applied to certain new opening programs, and half way through the school sent a refund of his application fee because it was denied accredition. he did not mention which school it was though.
but i personally dont htink acpe would deny accredition to any school when there is such shortage of pharmacists.😕

IMO, ACPE may understand a shortage of pharmacists, but their main priority is the quality of pharmacists, not necessarily quantity. They will deny any subpar school that doesn't show progress. Fortunately there haven't been that many. Some are on probation, most that are show improvement and maintain their accreditation. I've read that most of the programs get weeded out in precandidate application process.

That was me. The school was Texas A&M at Kingsville. They weren't denied accreditation. They were denied pre-candidate status, which in my opinion, is the most important status to gain.

Remember, it goes Pre-candidate --> Candidate --> Fully Accredited.

Being granted Pre-candidate status is basically ACPE's way of saying "We like your plan and let's give it a shot." Once given that status (HARDEST status to gain), ACPE will do everything it can to help you succeed. They'll visit the school, give pointers, spend time with the dean, etc. But if it doesn't live up to its plan, it will get put on probation or worse.

The real question should be "Has a school ever been given pre-candidate status, and then been denied full accreditation?" The answer to that is NEVER.

But there have been many school who applied for pre-candidate status and were denied. Texas A&M Kingsville was one of them a few years back. I believe Hawaii (HICP) was also denied pre-candidate status as well, but decided to keep going. Last I heard, Texas A&M did everything ACPE asked and I think were granted pre-candidate status.

Texas A&M does in fact have pre-candidate status. When I interviewed there a couple of weeks ago, we were told they will have achieved candidate status around or before summertime. The school itself is actually now part of the Texas A&M Health Science Center system (Texas A&M Medical School, Baylor Dental School...) it just happens to be on the Texas A&M U-Kingsville campus.

I got quite a few PMs about new pharmacy schools opening in 2008. So i thought it would be good idea to post it here rather than replying every individual. Please google it for more details or serach in the forum you might find some valuale information regarding it. Here are some information:

1. Harding University was supposed to have its first class this year but they have been denied by ACPE for this year. So, the plan has shifted for 2008 fall. Check website:

2. Lipscomb university in TN are planning their first class in 2008. Check the website:

3. Sullivan University college of pharmacy will have 3-year accelerated pharmD program. They are planning to have their first class in 2008. check the website:

Just keep in mind that ACPE approved policy number 3 which requires pharmacy schools to also gain regional accreditation:

If you go to a big university with a pharmacy school, then most likely the university already has regional accreditation (WASC for western states). I believe nursing schools also use this requirement to limit the number of nursing schools.

From what I understand, it was a standalone program, not affiliated with the University of Hawaii.
