Could someone please point me towards schools that emphasize service, working with underserved populations, or even a public health approach to medicine? I'm applying to a bunch of DO schools but am also looking for MD schools that follow that type of philosophy.

For example, Creighton is one that's big on service and so is Tulane. Any others?

Drexel. We do a community service project during our first year. There are a lot of opportunities to help the underserved, and even our primary hospital, Hahnemann, has as much diversity in the patient population as you can get.

Florida State! Though they aren't very OOS friendly.

TCMC also does as well. Though they are mostly for the NEPA region, I'm an OOS student heading there.

Mercer for sure, but unless you are a GA resident, you aren't getting in.

Morehouse also should fit those criteria but you have a better chance getting in if you are URM.

A lot of the DO schools for sure.

I've heard that Colorado and Utah emphasize service. I believe they require a large number of volunteer hours, and is it Utah which doesn't count AmeriCorps as volunteering?

You are correct. 3rd year rotations can go through rural locations in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (WWAMI).

UNC is big on public health.
Also, look for schools that are affiliated with large county hospitals. USC is the 1st place that comes to mind here.

And it's also in your best interest to maximize your volunteer hours wherever you apply. As a medical student, you can seek out opportunities to help the underserved as much or as little as you like. You can do the same as a physician, regardless of where you went to school.

UND, USD, and UofM - Duluth do, but you're pretty much SOL if you're OOS for those schools.

I feel like the one thing I see on nearly every school's website is working with the "underserved" and appreciating "diversity". These words have become so loaded that I don't even know which school would actually allow me to work with underserved or be around a diverse group of individuals. True, most schools give opportunities, but that doesn't mean it is their focus.

A lot of MD schools have really strong global health opportunities and missions to address the needs of the underserved. DO schools may as well, but MD schools I believe would have much stronger programs and opportunities. Kind of like how DO schools may not have as many research opportunities available.
