Do most medical schools send rejection emails to applicants who are not invited for an interview, or do they simply leave the applicants hanging without a status update, ie. applicants would assume that they have been rejected pre-interview if they do not receive an interview invitation after several months.

Most do send you a rejection, but some take longer to get around to it than others.

Some schools don't want to discard applicants until the last possible moment, just in case something better doesn't come along. That means some schools will not send out rejections until after their secondary deadline has passed (November) and others won't send out rejections until after the last interview takes place, others wait until the bitter end (May) or never notify you at all.

I once asked about this and I was told that sometimes the need for a courtesy interview* is brought to someone's attention late in the season and they don't want to have already rejected the appliant (rejection is forever).


*interview scheduled because a VIP makes a call on behalf of a relative or close associate . The VIP could be a high ranking faculty member or school official, a member of the board of trustees, a BIG donor, wealthy alumnus, a politician or high ranking government official.

I was left hanging with Harvard and Penn until January after being completed in August. I did receive a rejection somewhat earlier from Stanford in December though. However most schools will keep you updated and notify you if you've been rejected.

I've seen it happen (admission offer) two or three times in > 10 years. That's out of about 50 interviews so admission for that group is a long shot. In each case, the applicant was marginally qualified on paper but blew away the interviewers (closed file) leaving little doubt that they were passionate about medicine, could keep up academically in our program, and would get along well with others.

I'm in this situation, and worried that I only received the interview because of this, and that I really have no shot at an acceptance. The other early invitees, from what I've read on SDN, had much higher stats than I (4.0/40 vs my 35/3.65).

The bulk of my interview invites came in November/December, and rejections sprinkled basically all throughout the year from Oct. to March.
