Hi guys-

Anyone know, or know where I can find out, the "specialties" of specific schools? For instance, U of MN @ Duluth is huge on primary care, but what about schools known for Emergency medicine or having strong EMS ties? I've found residency placement data on the schools websites, but I'm looking for a better way than scouring each individual site - any advice or insight? Thanks!

No offense but you are probably on a futile search. AFAIK there is no single school that puts out a butt-load of EM physicians. In my class there were ~10 which is almost 10% of the class, but it changes from year to year and that will be true of any school. If you're primarily concerned with going to a school that will get you into a good EM program you can do it from about any school,, but you will have better contacts if you go to a school with an EM residency program.

There's no such thing as a school that "churns out" EM docs or any other particular specialty. That's one of the reasons why match lists are sometimes silly to compare because the given distribution of specialty choices is entirely student dependent! That is, if you want to become an EM doc and you have the necessary grades/LOR/etc, you'll become an EM doc! The same holds true for most any other specialty! You can't just say school X had 20% of their class go into EM so they're churning out tons of EM physicians! It just so happened that during that hypothetical year, 20% of the students wanted to do EM! You can go to most any medical school in the US and with the proper grades, board scores, and LOR match into whatever specialty you choose! Don't waste your time searching for such data... It's futile and the data is of no predictive value.

I mostly agree with the other posters, but I do think there are differences among med schools in the curriculum that tend to influence residency choice. For instance, my school has a dynamic neurology curriculum, and there tends to be a higher than average percentage of our grads that do neuro. Conversely, there are a couple of clerkships that are...lacking, for whatever reason, and we tend to put fewer grads than average in those specialties. I don't think there's any way to capture that, though, except by looking at several years of what people match in. Also, if the OP is particularly interested in EM, he might look at med schools that have a strong EM residency.

The only way of making any sense of knowning how many people went into a specialty is if you also knew how many tried to match. Even then, that's not giving you a good idea - you'd still want to know how many matched at their #1, #2, #3, etc. As far as I know, schools don't make this information available.

If you're interested in ER, definitely check out a place with strong ER/trauma.

A few big ones:

USC/LA County Hospital-covers ER for all of LA and lot of northern Mexico
Maryland Shock Trauma-one of the few trauma-focused hospitals, not sure if most med students from UMaryland rotate there
Bellevue Hospital at NYU for Manhattan
University of Washington in Seattle- main trauma center for 5 states, lots of research from their hospital, Harborview
Einstein/Montefiore in the Bronx

Most big cities and most county hospitals have pretty strong programs in ER. If you're thinking about the 'specialty' of a med school check out which programs are strong at their main hospitals. It's true that usually people are more interested the strong specialties at their hospitals.

If you're thinking about ER in terms of trauma focus, check out the trauma surgery threads in the residency forums for more specific info.

At RFUHS (new name) Chicago Medical School we seem to put out a but load of EM docs every year. Plus we get to do our EM rotations at Cook County which is very strong. This year I believe we put out something like 20 EM Docs which was the MOST in the country. We always seem to put out a ton of EM docs but I have to agree with other posters that it is very class dependent but as another poster said some schools are better in certain fields and therefore their students end up at those places. For CMS we get to do Cook County and MT Sinai in chicago for EM and therefore we have a ton of EM docs.

Tulane (or LSU-NO) and Charity Hospital

Hey Liz,

I think that you'd be better off starting a thread looking for good EM mentors. It might be a better approach to finding good schools to apply to.

Other students should know of EM physicians that are willing to give time to students, etc. I think that's more important at the med school level.

While interviewing at Davis, someone recommended an ER physician that is willing to mentor students, give you alot of hands on experience, etc.

I'll send you a pm....
