Are there any schools that you can apply to and don't require a bachelor's degree? For example, can a person have a good GPA and good MCAT score and activities and be interviewed/admitted without a bachelor's degree (pre-reqs done of course)??? Will schools even look at you?

My father got into Med School at Baylor before finishing his Bachelors. He finished his Bachelors while getting his MD (which he did in 3 years). So it's possible, but not very probable. I think people like my dad are the exception. Plus, it really helps when you're a certifiable genius.

The University of Oklahoma does not require one, yet the assistant dean of admissions spoke at my undergrad premed club meeting and told us that they have never admitted one without a degree. She said there are too many qualified applicants with one to choose someone without a degree.

I re-read the original post, are you asking about not having a degree before interviewing or matriculating? You only need a degree before matriculation.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe I heard Canada works like that. (where you can apply in your Junior year and just not do senior year and skip to medical school)

The US really doesn't work that way though. You need to finish your bachelors degree.

A friend of mine didn't finish her degree before matricualting (she's in texas). However the fact that she already had a degree from a foreign country may have worked in her favor.

lol, If you read the requirements for applicants for WashU Med, they do NOT require a Bachelor's Degree...only that you take the requisite coursework.

A lot of schools only require something like 90 credit hours. But don't expect to be overly successful applying. It's like how some schools have minimum MCAT scores, like a 24 or something. But applying with the bare minimum will not impress the adcom.

What about Pharmacy students that are applying to med school? I'm not pre-pharm, but one of my close friends is. She just graduated with a PharmD, and like most PharmD programs, you can apply after 2 years of undergrad, so no bachelor's degree was ever received.

Thoughts?

As long as she has her medical school prereqs fulfilled, the PharmD would substitute for the BS.

First off, we're talking about now, not 20 years ago when it was fairly common. Secondly, how does "certifiable genius" come into play during admissions? Did he put it down as an extracurricular?

Guess who was "Daddy's girl" in that family.

List that you're a member of Mensa?

Mensa is funny, especially because the founder once commented on how the entire organization was disappointing. True story, he said that he was hoping that they would use their brains to solve world poverty and cure cancer, but that people just use Mensa to feel superior and play puzzles with each other.

That's untrue. My father got into med school there without a bachelor's degree. It was based on his progressive GPA and his MCAT score. My father was also a H.S. dropout and had suffered severe brain damage from a car accident which crushed his entire left side and caused him to lose his left eye.

I only say that to point out a) it is possible even if less likely than many years back. b) if you're young and traditional, just do the bachelor's c) if for some reason you can't for whatever reason then at all costs do what it takes. Because no matter how unlikely, it CAN be done.

I tested into Mensa a couple years ago. We basically just have little get togethers to chat and do community service. I was a volunteer scholarship essay scorer for them this year. There definitely are some people that like to show off, but they do a lot of good stuff for the community too.

A friend's dad went to University of Maryland med after doing 3 years of 4.0 work in undergrad with a great MCAT. Like the stories told above, this falls into the category of "med school admissions in the 1970's"

Technically, there are many medical schools that do not require a bachelors degree, but they do require 90 credits, including the prerequisites with a GPA >3.5. Without strong recommendations and a high MCAT score...it is highly unlikely you will get an interview, let alone, an acceptance letter.

Thanks a ton. The people who asked these questions 5 years ago salute you. Next time, look at the dates on the post before necro-bumping a thread.

This could have some modern ties. Fulfilling only the mandated classes puts one just above the bare minimum... but also practices a little necromancy on the side? Woah.

arent there pharmacists who go through 5 yr combined programs (like uop) so they don't technically have bachlors degrees that apply to med school? I think thats supposed to work but thats a special case

There are some med schools that won't accept the substitution, but there are plenty of others that do.
