schools that require laptops?

From my own simialr experience at the moment, I'd advise you to hold off on getting anything for right now. Now, if your current computer is inoperable then by all means get something, but for med school you'll probably need something pretty powerful. For almost all of the med schools I'm applying to their standards are similar in terms of memory, hard drive, processor, etc. But there are variances. Operating systems for instance vary in terms of school policy. For some of the schools I'm interested in it's Windows XP professional, for others it's only vista pro. still others want certain programs like microsoft office 2007; it really varries.

In short, wait till you get in and then get the one that best fits the reqs.
Good luck btw.

Hey girlie, just a fyi the only thing that the warranty doesn't cover is theft, so guard your laptop like a hawk! A girl in our class had hers stolen out of her house and had to go buy a new laptop out of pocket midsemester, though they did give her the software again for free . . .

Thanks for the advice. (I'd forgotten about that.) I plan on having that thing stuck to me like glue.

If you're that worried about it you can get lojack so the police can track it if its stolen

All computers with a Dell warranty come with LoJack as well as accidental damage coverage.

It's called Computrace, and while most (all?) Dell laptops have it as an option, it requires an extra-cost subscription on top of the warranty. (When purchased through a given school, it may be included.)

When I purchased my desktop in late December and my laptop in early February, they all came with LoJack as the theft recovery software. This may have changed since then. It comes standard with those bundles, which are worth it. When I purchased my laptop I did a price difference between just getting a 3 year warranty and getting the 3 year bundle that included the accidental damage, theft protection, and many other things. After the extra discount it gives you at the end, it was an extra $9. So basically, I am going with the fact that it is included.
