Schools that welcome a business minded approach?

Over the last couple years, I have been delving pretty deep into entrepreneurship/ business theories in my spare time, and I have really enjoyed what I've learned so far.

I have a feeling that there could possibly be some stigma/suspicion for a applicant having a business/startup aspirations (since you should obviously aim for patient-centeredness). But what is the reception like for students bringing up these kind of things during application or interviews? Will you be welcomed? What schools are the most welcoming for you to explore the different avenues of medicine?

I really want to practice medicine, but I also crave the innovative side of medicine (not necessarily academia). What might be some good options for me to look into?

If you're asked about it and are passionate about it, I don't think schools will hold it against you. I discussed business aspirations in my interviews and thought it was well received. Schools love to have their name out there; if you are a successful medical entrepreneur, that reflects well on them.

I don't think that, as a general rule, schools are going to care too much. Many students have interests in business; in my class, there are several people who got MBAs prior to matriculating, and there are many more who worked as consultants for a few years. There are, however, schools that will be able to support that interest more than others. If business is something you want to seriously explore, then I would keep that in mind when choosing the schools you want to apply to and when deciding the school you're going to attend.

I am a healthcare administration major who hopes to spend an extra year to get my MBA during med school.

I never mentioned my entrepreneurial spirit/ambitions during interviews, but an interviewer has told me adamantly that medicine isn't a business; I still got into that school. Medicine welcomes creativity and innovation if you're good. Just know that sometimes the risks are high.

Wouldn't you, as the entrepreneur, define how and where you make your impact? "Medicine" is a huge landscape...

As for #2, I'm also wondering that. It seems like the trend to increase margins, so I'd imagine understanding business (from the dollars and cents side) would be fruitful, but I don't know how many admins would accept someone based on that criteria.
