Hi all..

I know I'm late in the game with apps.. but Ive been taking summer courses and trying to study for the MCAT. (yea yea.. still no excuse)

My AMCAS is mostly done.. unless i radically modify my personal statement... I'm also trying to come up with a final list of schools to apply to.

Here are my quick stats:
Profile:Non trad student (age: 27) - Business undergrad, 3 years work exp in business
Undergrad Business from Carnegie Mellon, DIY Post Bacc at Stony Brook (Just Basic Sciences)
BCPM: 3.77, Overall GPA: 3.67
MCAT: Practices average around 30 (range from 28 to 33)
ECs: My profile for details but not much clinical stuff, lots of undergrad/business related.. this is admittedly probably the biggest weakness in my app..
LOR: Probably another weak spot since most of my science classes were 500-600 student type classes and I didn't exactly have a chance to 'bond' with the prof..

Here are the schools I have so far:
Albany Medical College
Albert Einstein of Yeshiva University
Columbia University
Mount Sinai School of Medicine
New York Medical College
New York University
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Downstate
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Upstate
University of Pittsburgh
UMDNJ - New Jersey
UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson

Any ideas on additional schools to apply to?
Goals:I have a strong interest ultimately working with the urban underserved possibly in an Emergency Medicine/Trauma medicine capacity (So Downstate and Albert Einstein are up high on my list). I'd apply to UW, but I haven't exactly had the opportunity to 'demonstrate' my desire to work with the underserved (I'm looking for opportunities for my glide year)..
Reach/Realistic/Safety:Any ideas for realistic 'reach' schools? Any schools you think I should add for 'safety' (if there is such a thing)
DO?I was also considering applying to DO schools.. (in all seriousness, I agree with the DO philosophy more than the traditional MD philosophy.. but I do see a convergence in their philosophies and didn't want to shoot myself in the foot for competitive residencies in the future.. atleast according to rumors).
Location:Location isn't really that big of a priority for me, tho preference is close to the NE (ie: cheaper travel).. but I wouldn't mind being on the west coast for a couple of years :-D.. but in all reality, I would sacrifice living on a coast and the affiliated travel expenses to attend a great program that suits my goals.

I have MSAR.. but outside of looking at their mission statements/selection criteria and grade averages.. im at a lost.. give me schools to look at!! 🙂

Thanks in advance for any help!

Are you willing to live outside of the New York area?

Yes.

I just edited my post about travel/location for more details..

U.Minnesota-Twin Cities, U.Miami.....U.Miami has a decent OOS student policy, and their mcat section scores are below ten in each section.....plus you'll be a cheap AirTran flight from NY!

[!

If I were you, I would also apply to VCU and Penn State. They are state schools that reserve a rather large number of seats for out of state residents.

Good luck

How is your PS comming along?

Cornell would make a nice reacher. Your list looks alot like mine. Good luck.

I've been primarily studying for MCATs..

Just going to let the feedback I've received stew until I have more time.. I've been trying to fit in work on the PS and work on my AMCAS when not studying..

I will let u know when I have another draft (dont hold your breath though! ).

jefferson or drexel if you don't mind philly?

Apply to a lot of schools since you are applying late. Realistically, you should get above a 31 to have a decent chance.

check out 👍 MAYO MEDICAL SCHOOL 👍

(1) only 42 students per class
(2) cheap tuition - pay between $0 and ~$11,000 per year (everybody gets some sort of scholarship)
(3) The Mayo Clinic is one of the best hospitals in the USA

give it a look
good luck

.

UConn might be a nice one to add. They take a fair proportion of out-of-staters.
