I'm a non-trad (graduated 2008) that is applying for the next admit cycle; I was looking over some of the prereq sites, and I just found this on Duke's:

"All science requirements must be completed not more than seven years before you enter medical school."

Ack. Do any of you know of any other schools that have an expiration date on courses?

I'm not aware of any others. If you check my MDApps, none of the schools I applied to had those requirements. I graduated undergrad way back in 2005, so most of my pre-reqs are over 10 years old.

I would just make your school list and then go to each school's site on your list and confirm they don't have this limitation.

+1

I didn't have any problems. My prerequisite classes are all 20+ years old (graduated in 1993). also check out my MD apps to see what schools I applied to. I think I applied to 8 MD and about 12 DO schools.

I had more interviews than I could possibly afford to attend, and was granted acceptances to 3 of my top 8 schools.

I did carefully stay away from most of the "big name" schools where I had a very slim chance. I matched my school list with the LizzyM scores for each school +/-2 pts. I also dropped schools that have obvious in-state bias (more than 70% of class in-state, why throw money away when chances are stacked against you?).

Off of the top of my head, no I think Duke is the only school that I have heard about having deadlines or expiration dates for when you took pre-req courses. I would suggest if there is a particular school that you are interested in then I would just call that school really quick and ask and they will tell you.

Good Luck!

Most schools, I believe, will take your credits. There are a few that are picky but, as the other posters have said, it generally won't be a problem. I finished back in 2004 and didn't have any problem (I was granted a number of DO interviews).

g'luck

It's a pain but you'll need to call schools and ask individually. Duke for example has a stated policy of having credits expire but when I called they gave me a pass on my physics being about 12 years old and gave me an interview invite. I think Jefferson had a really strict policy (5 years or something like that) and wouldn't make any exceptions. It's really variable and exceptions are sometimes made.

I assumed that mine would be too "stale" (I graduated in '97, with most of the pre-reqs done by maybe '95 or so) but my wife, who was on her school's ad-comm when she was in med school, thought not. I'm still retaking some because I could use the refresher for the MCAT (I just finished retaking general chemistry, for example, and I was surprised at how rusty I was on it. Then I realized I hadn't taken it since my senior year of high school).
