Schools with good Derm Residencies

Anyone with experience know which schools have good derm residency programs?

I'm applying to med school--should I choose schools where they have strong Derm residencies? Or does that not matter at all, and just wait til I need to find a residency to start choosing schools-with-good-derm-prog's???

If I understand your question to be.. should you apply only to med schools with strong derm programs if your ultimate goal is a derm residency? The answer is No..you should apply to med school with the goal of getting into a good school.If you are lucky enough to have several to choose from then its not unreasonable to do some research and pick one with a strong derm program.

Yes, that was my question. So it's better to go to a good school than a worse school, (the worse one with a better derm program)?

It all depends what you mean by "better or worse".Jefferson has a highly regarded dematology program even though the school may be considered less prestigious than others.So it is true that in some cases the derm dept has better(or worse) reputation than the school does overall.Not all medical schools have a dermatology residency associated with it,so it would be best to seek out a school with one if possible. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/longk/dermatology.html Your chances of getting a derm residency are much more related to your individual performance in school,research and boards than on the name of the school.However Harvard,Yale do very well getting the students into derm! Should you go to a "worse "med school with a better derm dept?..it all depends on the specific programs, but in general the best derm depts would help you land more helpful LORs and research.

ny skindoc has given great advice and i agree wholeheartedly. just as there are the jeffersons and drexels of the world, there are the johns hopkins of the world that have miserable derm dept's and less impressive match rates for such a stellar school. while step 1 scores and aoa status is 75% of matching in derm, coming from a killer derm department that will back you up is vital when it come to lobbying, support, lor's, and the final match lists. that being said, i can at least make an unqualified attempt to list some great derm programs:

nyu
stanford
penn
ucsf
miami
iowa

furthermore, check out that link and follow the trend of inbred programs, and those programs that only take from "brand name" schools, etc.

Bumped because of discussion about keeping your mind open about where to apply for residency, as good departments can be found in unexpected places.

I would suggest that if you want to pick you school based on your interest in dermatology, pick one where there is an approachable dermatology department with a chair who is interested in mentoring medical students. I am not sure how you can find this out, but I would imagine that the reception you will receive from departments will vary from school to school.

I would also say that while this is a reasonable factor to consider, there are many other important things to look at when picking a medical school. You don't want to end up at a place that has a good dermatology department but is otherwise a bad place for you, decide that maybe dermatology is not your thing (however confident you are now that this is what you want to do) and then be unhappy. If it comes down to two places and you think you are going to be happy at both places then add the dermatology factor to the equation.

Maybe if you have a more specific idea of your choices then everyone can give you more specific advice.

seriously, if you look at the rest of the list, you go uh huh uh huh uh huh that makes sense and then you hit iowa. iowa?

yet, i have yet to meet an applicant who wasn't impressed after leaving the iowa interview. often, we're talking "they are my surefire #1" impressed. they really run an excellent program there
