I am trying to narrow down my school list a bit more and haven't taken the DAT yet (so will not be applying as early as ideal). I had read Detroit Mercy tends to be a bit slow and most things are done later (interviews etc.) On aadsas, their deadline isn't until February so I was wondering, for those that won't have everything in so early, would it be wise to apply more to schools with later deadlines as they are more likely to be doing things later in the cycle even if schools with earlier deadlines (October/November) could be done on time?

Thanks for and help!

bump. I'm in the same boat.

When are you taking your admissions test? and which schools you applying to>

While the logic makes sense on paper, I'd never go off of those posted deadlines. Unless you're taking the DAT in December, it's probably not a great way to narrow down your list. Even for schools who start things late with later deadlines, you don't want to go anywhere near those deadlines. They'll accept them of course, but unless you have a seriously champion application (amazing stats), you're not likely to get much action beyond waitlists. I'm no adcom, but with schools preaching 'apply early', it'll take something amazing to stand out late in the game. When are you taking the DAT? If you're talking late August/September, I wouldn't sweat it too much unless you end up doing terrible. Your app will still be complete in October, which isn't too terrible.

I just today received an e-mail to schedule a time to take the DAT and was thinking of taking it late August/early September (so I had ample time to study, but still not too late). I have listed below the schools still on the list. I wouldn't say I have a stellar application, but it is decent I think (3.7 gpa, 3.8 sgpa 30 hrs shadowing, research, decent E.C.s). Although I do not plan to be submitting near any of the deadlines, the thought process was that schools with later deadlines will be on later cycles and taking the DAT so late will not be as negative, whereas schools like, lets say Michigan, according to their deadline would get things done earlier (and therefore a late Michigan application could be an early UDM application). The logic may be off, but that is why I am asking here.

Hey Wlmed, this was exactly what I had to do! I took my DAT very late so I had to eliminate the schools that preferred early applicants. The key is to not look at when their deadlines are, but to dig through sdn to find out when they start reviewing applications/interviewing.

Here's a small list of schools that you should look into:
Upenn
UCSF
UCLA
PITT
OHSU
UDM

good luck 🙂

Most of those schools will fill their interview spots before their deadline. I suggest applying to all the schools you were planning on in the first place and getting everything submitted before you take your DAT. It takes about two weeks for AADSAS to get and send your scores out to the schools.

Would it be safe to say that newer schools have later cycles? I vaguely remember something about MSDOH having a third of its seats still open in May/June.

No. In my experience, both MWUs and and Western and ASDOH were early movers. MOSDOH will probably pounce on this cycle once they get the green light to start classes this fall. That meeting is within the next few weeks, I believe. They didn't start interviewing until late April/May and technically, all seats are still 'open' and they have their preferred candidates on deck to become officially accepted once they get that green light.
