Hello I am a Florida resident. 511 MCAT and 3.8+ GPA cumulative and science.

So I've gone through the MSAR and have 35 MD schools. I was wondering if there was a list with schools who have a regional bias for OOS.

Most of my OOS schools are private and have 35%+ OOS. But there are some with lower OOS and that are public schools of which I am not sure I should have on there. In Michigan I am thinking about applying to Central Michigan (19% OOS), Michigan State (28%), Wayne State (34%), and Oakland Beaumont (52%). All of these are public schools.

All of the schools had matriculated student(s) from Florida.

Also there is Rowan University (32%) from New Jersey. There is Toledo University (28%) and Wright State University (45%) from Ohio. These are also public schools. Again these schools all had matriculated student(s) from Florida.

Not sure how many were accepted from Florida and some of these schools had all of the neighboring states with matriculated students. Do people accepted into these schools typically have strong ties to the state? I don't have strong ties to Michigan, Ohio, or New Jersey.

And what makes strong ties to a state? I have some states where I have family and I have visited and spent time in over the years in which I could see myself living there even after residency.

Really want to know if I should apply to these schools or if it is just a waste of time and money. Thanks.

Also curious about this. Will be applying this upcoming cycle as well.

same - any more feedback would be greatly appreciated

The University of Washington program is heavily weighted toward residents of the WWAMI states (Wyoming, Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho).

I don't remember exactly what the last numbers were, but something around 10k OOS/OOR applicants applied and 55ish were accepted. Almost all accepted students (by far) are from a WWAMI state or have some deep tie to the area.

If you don't, I would avoid applying. Super low yield OOS.

Just posted something that touches on this a bit. Of the statistics that are out there, I think that it makes the most sense to look at the population of students that receive an interview at the school in question. It isn't perfect, but schools won't interview people that they aren't interested in, and I think it is better than looking at the student body demographics alone, since that doesn't tell you much about the odds it took for those people to get accepted.
