I know this may be a really stupid question but I was going through some sites and they either bring up Scieice GPA, Total GPA, or Non-Sciene GPA. I was wondering if Non-Science GPA and Total GPA are the same thing? Or is Non-Science GPA all classes except science courses? and which one is more important?THanks.

Hey there,

Non-science and Total GPA are different.

Total GPA includes both your non-science and your science GPA, where non-science includes all courses that are NOT BCMP (Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics).

As for which one is more important than the other, its hard to say anything concrete about the process but a general rule of thumb is to make sure that you show that you can handle the sciences (>3.5).

Take this scenario, if there is Student A with a non-sci GPA of 3.8 and a science GPA of 3.4, his/her overall GPA is a respectable 3.6 (about average for accepted students). Student B has non-sci of 3.4 and science of 3.8, average is the same but Student B has shown he/she can handle science coursework better than A. This is assuming all other aspects of the students are the same.

Hope that helps.

Forgot to mention that the # of units you take in each area is also factored when they look at the GPA. Less units in the sciences (say you were a non-science major) means that they will consider that GPA moreso to gauge how well you can handle the science load.
