I am doing research as independent study and it is through the med school at my university. On my transcript it will appear as "Pediatrics 499". Will this be counted towards my science gpa when I apply to med schools??

Thanks!!!!

Do you get graded on that? Mine were all P/F.

You can argue it with amcas. Just send them an email stating why you believe it should or should not be science.

You self-declare the classification any individual course is input as in AMCAS. The AMCAS reviewers will go through and verify the information you put in. If they do end up changing it from BIOL to HLTH (unlikely) you can file a challenge and state that the material was primarily Biology-oriented and learned in a science format, fulfilling the BIOL classification. Providing a course description that supports that declaration would almost guarantee they accept the challenge. AMCAS is run primarily based upon an honor system.

It's based on an honor system. If your research is primarily biology-related, put it as biology, if it's primarily health sciences, put it as health sciences. Adcoms will not look kindly on an applicant that is trying to manipulate their BCPM GPA through dishonesty.

Depends what you did for the project. For example, I do ophthalmology research (6 credits this semester!) and the bulk of what I do is genetics and molecular bio-- complementation crosses, Western blotting, etc. I can justify that it counts as Genetics for my AMCAS GPA. Can you justify that yours should be Bio rather than Health Science?
