😕 I can't imagine why engineering courses would not be considered under the science category. Why did you think that?

Quick question. If one retakes a class, the only grade the counts for calculating GPA for osteo schools is the grade received in the retake. Right?

wondery why i thought it didnt count?!?!?! you're joking right??? it has been posted on this board many times that it is NOT counted in the science gpa, and if you do a search on the internet you will find that everyone says it is NOT i REPEAT NOT counted in the science gpa!

The medical schools will be paying close attention to your science GPA when evaluating your application. The science GPA is derived from the grades you receive in your Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math courses. Obviously, any course taken in these four academic departments will count. Statistics courses will count too. Psychology, Anthropology, and Engineering courses DO NOT COUNT. Biological Basis of Behavior courses that are cross-listed with the Biology Department will count; others will not.

i have solved the problem!

MD schools do NOT count engineering courses in the science gpa... DO schools do count them! i just got off the amcas website...

what is up with that???

Well, there's the BCPM GPA and the science GPA. They're two different things.

ok, then could you tell me the difference as you see it because AMCAS does not designate a difference... they only have BCPM and AO... AO is all other courses not in the BCPM... and they do not include engineering in the BCPM gpa... so you have your total gpa, your BCPM gpa, and your AO gpa.... where does the science gpa with engineering fit in?????

Alrighty, I'll spell it out for you...

There are two different applications we are considering here, the AMCAS and the AACOMAS. They are separate entities. Different rules, different sections, different names you make your check out to.

The AMCAS separates your GPA into, as you already said, the total, the BCPM, and all others (AO), where those engineering courses would go since AMCAS does not consider engineering as Biology, Chemistry, Physical, or Math classes. By definition, this makes complete sense. Clear?

The AACOMAS is a little more detailed. You can choose from a list of things to describe each of the classes you took. There is a key that explains what classes fall under what category. This is where you would designate an engineering class as "Other Science". After you fill all of that out, they can then extrapolate a total GPA and a science GPA.

Still confused? 😉

I'm not trying to antagonize you. Really, I'm not. Friends? 🙂

this might be a silly question, but at my school, they only offer a B.S in psychology. so would that mean psych courses go towards my science GPA? probably not, but i thought i'd ask anyways

FutureM.D.

You ar correct in concluding that psych classes will not be a part of your science GPA. You Psychology classes should be categorized under Social/Behavioral Science and thus will not be factored in when caluclating you science GPA.

Good Luck and have a great weekend everyone!
