I was reading through a lot of the topics to answer some of my questions about how med schools react to GPA. I was wondering what the comparison is towards science and cumulative GPA. Do they consider them differently and/or place special emphasis towards science GPA?
Plus, how do the top tier med schools (I realize how stupid this sounds since all med schools are considered 'top tier' but I am talking about the top 10 medical schools based on rankings) react to a bad first semester of college?
On a side note, I have a 3.0 science GPA (3.3 cum) which is why I wanted to ask about the difference in emphasis laid by medical school and my goal is to attend Hopkins.

Thank you

PS- This topic is in no way a plea to be reassured about my GPA. I know I'll be fine if I work harder (and actually study) in the next cumulative years.

As long as you can pull up your GPA and show a strong upward trend, you still have a shot at top tier schools, depending of course upon other factors such as MCAT, EC's, etc. Both forms of GPA are important but of course your sGPA shows how you can handle your prereqs and associated science courses, so take that as you may. What year are you now?

I'm in my first year entering my second semester. It's probably too early to worry, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to create a topic to get my questions answered now.

One more questions, I took Biology and Chemistry classes even thought I didnt have to take them due to AP class credit (to reinforce for MCAT). Will these courses count towards my GPA even though I didn't have to take them?

yes. basically everything counts. even college classes taken during high school years.
