science prof LORs

do the schools not even look at ur application if you don't meet their LOR requirement?
as an example
michigan states that they want science prof who have taught you
however, I only have 2 science LORs,
1 is from a science prof who i have taken a course under
BUT
1 is from a science prof who I have NOT taken a course under but done research under...

I am a bit discouraged...
I called boston and they told me that science prof LOR i've taken a course under is highly recommended BUT LOR that i've done research under is still reviewed but reviewed less favourably
any thoughts?

Let's put it this way. Given the intense competition, you're probably going to want to not only satisfy their requirements, but do so in a favorable way in every way possible.
