scores for neurology

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anybody have an idea about what type of scores they are looking for neurology?
Neurology isn't especially competitive. The average USMLE is a 220 or so. As with all of medicine, prestigious programs are more selective, newer/less known programs are less selective.

Try your best to score as high as possible. You can never take it again! Higher score = more options! Also try to be a well rounded applicant.

Score as well as you can. Imagine that you need a 260. Keep your options open.

As with IM or peds, the reality is that a 230 will probably get you into almost any neuro program in the country, if the rest of your application is excellent, i.e. the clinical rotations. With a PhD, they will be recruiting you.

great thanks guys! i got a 216 which i'm not really that happy about...do you think it is still realistic to get into a good program?

Absolutely you can get into a good program! Your 216 is an average score, which is great. That means 50% of all medical students scored BELOW you! Just don't be stupid about applying. Apply broadly - to some upper tier programs, mid tier programs, and low safety programs. Make your application solid by getting good 3rd/4th year grades and doing some audition rotations. See if you can get good LORs from some neurologists.

Yes. I think they will appreciate your PhD/research more. Just make sure you get honors at least on neurology and internal medicine, and excel in your research and clinical electives, and I think you'll do well.

i had accidently chosen the wrong option and didnt realize it. i am only a medical student not a MD/PhD student. odds still good for getting into a decent residency program?

step 1 is only one piece of the puzzle. How are your rotation evals? Research? Other interesting things?
