Hi, I have a little question. I know that most of the programs, when they're looking for resident candidates, look for step 1 scores mainly.
I did really bad on step 1 (79/194), but I did good on step 2 (94/232).
Now, I 've heard some competitive programs even have this software in order to get rid of those applications that have step 1 scores lower than the ones they're looking for, is that true?
But I also have heard that some of the programs look on your step 2 scores. Do you think this might be the case?
On the other hand, what would be the role of very good LOR's in this particular case? What about the personal statement and previous residency training in the same specialty to which it's being applied to?
I'd really appreciate any repplies.

You did the best thing you could have done...you improved your step II score over your step I score.

By the way, a 194 step I isn't anything to be ashamed of, and a 232 on step II is great. Sure some selective programs may gander at the step I score a bit longer than you would like and may not grant you an interview, but I suspect that the majority of programs will take note of your step II score which will help you out.

I too have heard that some programs have specific board cutoffs, but I know of some programs that were suposed to have cutoffs which ended up not having them set in stone (friends getting into those programs who didn't meet the reported cutoff). Just keep in mind that your application is not made up of just one or two numbers, so it would be in your best interest to get the best LORs you can. Furthermore, a good personal statement and previous training shouldn't hurt. Why the previous residency training?

Why the previous residency training?[/QUOTE]

Because I've trained in Mexico and there's no way USA take any of those years for board certification.
Thanks for your fast reply

Most programs will average your Step 1 and 2 scores together and then use that number when determining the cutoff. keep in mind that many programs don't even have cutoffs.
