Does anyone know if there's going to be a scramble this year? It's officially 9am San Francisco time and there still haven't been any openings posted. There's no way that there's not even one open spot, is there?

That makes absolutely no sense!
If you don't know the program, how do u know there is even one with vacancies?

Sometimes the program is ashamed that it did not fill. It would rather secretly contact the people that interviewed there but did not match.

Even this last response doesn't make a ton of sense, unless programs just refuse to even rank some of the people that interview with them, or if the unmatched applicants refused to rank the program. The way the formula of the match works then as long as the program has you ranked even if it is dead last on their list you will still match there even if they are dead last on your list as well. Does this make sense? So I don't see how they can contact people that they interviewed that didn't match there... I think if a program wants to fill an empty spot it is highly in there best interest to post it on SF Match then they will at least know what their best choice amongst unmatched applicants is. I am sure that there are very qualified people who went unmatched only because they interviewed at only the best programs that they got interview offers at and then only ranked the best programs and came up short on match day.

Overall, I think it is ridiculous on the program's part to not rank applicants that were interviewed at the program. Unless Visioncam and Pars Plana can stop beating around the bush and come out with the truth, I find this thread to be absolutely ridiculous.
If a program calls an applicant for an interview, then it should rank the applicant, even if dead last, for courtesy sakes! If a program is calling an applicant it interviewed after the match, then that is a program that should not deserve any residents at all. It is just plain disrespectful on the program's part. Don't get me wrong, a residency is a residency, but seriously, if that is how the faculty chooses to behave, it says a lot as to how they will treat you in the future. Furthermore, programs should post vacancies, if they are a decent, honest, responsible program. If I ever become a program director/chairman, it would certainly be one of the many things I would push.

There is a possibility you didn't consider. Actually, this happened to me a couple years ago. If the program ranks everyone and still doesn't fill, they can contact the applicants they didn't interview, who didn't match. They had access to this information, so I got the call for an interview. (I didn't get the position, but that's another story...)

ok! let me try to clarify some of the questions have been thru the match twice (first unsuccessfully, lucky 2nd time)
As a fourth yr, when I first applied and went unmatched, i called sfmatch and begged them to tell me if there were any vacancies. All they told me was that there were a couple but wouln't give me any details. So when I got the match statistics, it showed that there were 2 programs that went unfilled.
However, there were no vacancy posted on sfmatch. I was frustrated. I later found that pds prefer to fill the spot quickly by interviewing candidates that they know are unmatched -from their own school, by calling nearby med schools, or resident in another program from their own institution etc)
They prefer to do this as opposed to paying 100$ and posting their vacancy on sfmatch and getting 1000 calls from everybody.

So it might be that pars plana went thru the match and had access to the statistics or found out by calling that there was 1 unfilled spot or he/she might be bluffing.

The official match stats are out on the SFMatch web page, available if you are registered. They report there was 1 spot that went unfilled.

Guys, I talked to SF Match the day of and they told me about the spot and that 'the program prefers not to advertise at this time'. And I know for a fact that some programs, especially elite ones, might rank only 1/3 of the people they interview.
