If I don't match into my preferred field (path) how do you go about scrambling into a different field. I.E. do you need new LOR from docs in the new field, new PS. How does it work. I would accept a link if someone wants to save time.

It certainly helps if you are scrambling into a new field. I wouldn't bother if you are scrambling into a Prelim or TY position.

Although most PDs realize that not everyone applying to their open position was originally interested in their field, I think, if there is anyway possible to get such letters (or if you have some generic ones, "TY will do well regardless of what he chooses to do), that would be good, as well as a PS.

I think it can be hard to scramble into a totally unrelated field...except for desparate programs, they may prefer to fill with people who didn't match into that specialty first off or those who were going for something similar. I'd urge you to consider a Prelim year over a totally different specialty unless you really think you could be happy doing that specialty you scrambled into.

If you use ERAS to scramble, you would need to upload those letters and PS now, if I'm not mistaken...does anyone know if they let you upload new documents before the scramble?

I think if you are going to scramble, don't do it into some specialty you don't want, unless you are totally uncompetitive for path. Scramble into a TY or more likely a medicine prelim year. That way you don't screw yourself over and have to stay doing something forever that you don't like. Plus you can work hard to prove yourself as an intern, and then if you have to you could do a research year after that (path research). Alternately, try to look for a backup research year now (if you think you won't match).
