I've been hearing pro's and con's about these two for weeks now and wanted to ask what the exprienced pre-meds thought about this.

A little background about myself:

~3.6 GPA
2 summers NIH-SIP
100 hospital volunteer
1year undergrad research
~25hour/wk part time work at school
~60 shadowing hours

what would you suggest I do?

thx

Which appeals to you more? Personally, for me, scribing sounds like hell and I enjoy research.

When are you planning on applying and how long would you plan on staying at the NIH 1 or 2 years?

NIH postbacc and volunteer/shadow on weekends.
i second this. the NIH experience would be invaluable if you need a fall back short/long term career in case you don't get in to medical school (fingers crossed you get in though!)

I am currently planning to study for MCAT this winter while shadowing (hopefully get hours up to ~100) then take it Spring. Send applications this summer.

thnx for responses

If you are interested in research, NIH. If you are interested in learning a bit about taking care of patients, scribe.

NIH will look better for applications (assuming your clinical experience is satisfactory). Scribing will be an incredible asset once you are in medical school. Most of the people at the top of my class are former scribes. Most of them would also agree that scribing doesn't stand out like it used to as far as the application beast goes. The choice is yours.
