I currently have offers for two different roles at two different clinics that I am trying to choose between.

The first is technically a medical scribe role, however it was described as being a dynamic role where I would observe a lot and potentially interact directly with patients. It is at a pain management clinic and I would be working under an anesthesiologist MD.

The second is a medical assistant/front desk role. I was told in my interview that there was a ton of opporutnity to grow and receive training in the position to the point where I may even provide some treatments and see patients on my own. This position, however, is at a podiatry office under a DPM so not MD/DO observation. I spoke to someone on admissions at my top choice school and in response to me asking would a job at a podiatry clinic still count as good clinical experience for an MD school they said: "I would think so. A good place to start but still would try to get physician exposure".

Both are very supportive of the journey to med school and both are hiring becuase the current person in the position is going to medical school. The MA position clinic is slightly more flexible/understanding than the scribe position clinic, as I was told I could increase/decrease my hours as needed and switch to part time if necessary during MCAT, interviews, etc. The scribe clinic says they will all write rec letters for me and help in getting into school but I'm unsure about flexibility when it comes to hours, part-time, etc.

For reference, both have the same standard benefits/PTO/etc., the scribe starts at $20/hour (which they increased as they seem to really want me) vs the MA which starts at $18/hour. Both are willing to increase pay after a few months. The hours for the scribing are 8-4, however is 4 days at one location about 15 min from me and 1 day at a location ~30 min from me w/o traffic. The hours for the MA position vary more with some day 8-5 but Fridays 8-12, it is only at one location about 12 min from me.

I would prefer an MD environment/observation over DPM of course but the podiatry clinic seems to be offering more hands on experience. Do med schools favor scribing or MA experience more and would a letter from a DPM count less than one from an MD?

I would recommend working with an MD rather than a DPM.
