Hey everyone,

Just a little background on myself: I graduated in December with a degree in finance and accounting. I'm applying for post bacc programs that would start in June and I want some more valuable exposure to medicine before starting. I got hired as an ER scribe and I would start ASAP, but I know most companies want a 1 year commitment and I may be moving away for the post bacc program. How much of a red flag would it be if I only scribed for 3-4 months? Has anyone scribed as a non-trad and felt as though it took you longer to adapt to the work without any experience in the medical field outside of shadowing?

The natural progression for scribes is to move on to bigger and better things, and if you are moving on to a formal post-bacc/SMP, then (at least for the company I was a part of) there is not much of an issue. Scribing has a very steep learning curve and in three to four months you will likely find yourself leaving at the same point where you are comfortable enough with the job to actually start retaining some knowledge/insight into clinical medicine.

You could ask them to transfer you? Let them know ahead of time, but try and get transferred closer to your post-bacc location. Then you could do 1 day a week? I highly doubt an 8 hour shift once a week would get in the way of your studies

I think a good 1/4th of my class were scribes before med school. I know some did it for less than a year also.

As an employer, I wouldn't want anyone jumping ship so soon.

As a career advisor, however, nobody will hold your short stint against you once you move onto bigger things.
