Scribing part-time

I do it. It's definitely not a cake walk, but it's manageable. It has made school seem much easier to me because of the intensity of the job at times. It also keeps me honest with my time and I am quite a bit more organized because of it. If you have the option to go part-time, do it. Full time I would save for a gap year or until the last semester of your senior year.

Scribing is designed to be a part time job in my opinion. It's a stepping stone, not a career. We cap out at 1000 hours a year, but there are a few employees who are full time that are the exception to that rule.

I started about 3 weeks before I began my Junior year. It was adequate timing as I was able to push through the training portion before the start of the fall semester, although there was some overlap on my summer semester, but I wasn't worried about that.

I have only been scribing for 4 months, but I will be scribing during the summer in addition to taking classes.

I scribe part time!

I work for an independent physicians group, and it's frankly very relaxed and awesome, so if you can find a group that does independent scribing outside of the big companies, I would really recommend it. I was the only person on our scribe staff last year that worked as little as I did, and PT scribes are definitely in the minority. I had an awesome boss though and the environment was so chill, that I still get a lot out of it. I've been working there for 1.5 years now, and I generally "binge work" over holidays and breaks, but do a few shifts during school.

We also get to schedule ourselves by sending in our availability, so that's great in terms of working around being a student. I would highly recommend it! I think as a student it kept me very motivated to see the healthcare field that I was working to be a part of while working, and additionally it's invaluable experience.

At our company, almost every scribe other than myself was a PT scribe and FT student (I was a FT scribe, PT student, PT other work). A few quit because they wanted to focus more on school, but for the most part people seemed to do just fine. My bosses both did FT school and FT scribe. The shifts were quite flexible and could fit any schedule.

I scribed part-time, starting the second semester of my sophomore year (I switched to be more like full time over the summer, though). It was a big time commitment, but it was a really good experience! Definitely taught me how to stay highly scheduled, and provided a constant inspiration to work hard so that I could end up in the medical field. It was really useful to study for the MCAT after my sophomore year alongside scribing, since a lot of the medical cases I saw helped me make sense of the physiology on the BS section (not sure if this will be the same type of thing with the new MCAT...)

I did have to quit the second semester of my junior year, a year after I started scribing, because my course load was simply too intense. So keep that in mind -- with some classes, it is not feasible to maintain both the scribe job and high academic performance. I think this is not an issue too much of the time, but it is something to consider.
