I'm two days into my surgery rotation, and I must be the only medical student in the history of the world who doesn't like wearing scrubs. My biggest problem - the scrub pants keep falling down. I literally walked around the hospital with one hand on my waist for the entire day. I'm definitely overweight, so I know it's going to be more difficult to find pants that fit well, but does anyone have tips for at least preventing them from falling down around my ankles 24/7?

I'm no rocket surgeon, but I've been able to make things work by tying them up . . .

Some questions:

- Are you wearing a pager and/or cell phone on your pants? That's going to weigh down your pants to the point where they may start sliding off.

- Where is the waistband hitting? Around your bellybutton, around your hips? 😕

you must not have any hips at all. just gotta cinch that as tight as possible or buy elastic waistband scrubs.

today i had my useless pager and the code pager on my scrubs. that was hella heavy, until i realize i could put the code pager on my coat lol.

Be careful about buying your own scrubs. At some hospitals, if you bring in outside scrubs (especially as a med student), the scrub nurses will rip you a new one.

Tie your scrubs when sitting down to get a better cinch. Suck in when tying.

I would start off with getting a smaller size... Disclaimer: I am not a rocket scientist

Agree with above:

1) scrub bottoms are just for covering your nether regions; pagers and such can go on the coat

2) when tying, instead of pulling across, suck in, pull the cords laterally, then keep tension on one side and tie one handed (it is surgery after all, right?). Blouse the scrub top out and that should hide the obvious indentation into your gut.

See "pee pee on my scrubs" for other sage advice.

I always wear a pair of athletic shorts under my scrub pants and I clip my pager to both. Scrub pants always get loose no matter how tight you tie them, but athletic shorts with good elastic (i.e. not 10 years old) should still hold up. Also agree with sitting down to tie them, or sucking in your gut like I do.

You can thread a piece of elastic through the waistband instead of the string. Buy a thinish piece at a craft store and look at sewing websites for a quick and easy way to thread it.

How about a double knot?
Or you could be one of those people that wear the dress kind of scrubs...
Sew on some velcro??!!

I know a very tall, thin, surgeon who has been in the middle of surgery and had her scrubs fall off. Luckily she had the sterile gown on over them.
