I was at an information session yesterday for those applying for the entering class of 2006, ran by the Director of Admissions at the attached medical school, and near the end of the presentation, the Director asked for a show of hands of people that know about the Student Doctor Network. In a room of about 60 people, only four people raised their hand, including myself. WTF? I thought SDN was a little more popular than that. Anyone else surprised when their pre-med friends or peers have never heard of SDN, especially when they're in the process of applying?

I wear the SDN shirt sometimes (the one about being the dr. your dad wanted you to marry) and people will ask about it and be like, huh ok, and then forget about it by the next time I wear it. I don't think any of the premeds at my school actively use it. But that's ok, I want all the goodies for myself. (j/k)

Trust me many people know about it, they just dont want to admit it lol...

I wish I didn't know it. I curse the guy who introduced me to it. Quitting this site will be harder than kicking a heroin habit.

I didn't know about SDN until after I was accepted to med school. In a way, I'm glad I didn't find the forums until then. Reading posts by some of the über pre-meds on this board would have unnecessarily freaked me out about the application/interview process.

Oh, I know that more than four of the people in that room knew about SDN. And I know that pre-meds tend to be timid and dislike raising their hand in a group situation. But still, I was highly surprised that more people didn't acknowledge SDN and the major impact it has had in their lives 😀

I remember taking a physics class a while back and knowing a close friend whom studied with me for tests. One day he wears an SDN shirt and I'm like, "hey man, you know about that site?"

He responds, "yeah, I'm one of the moderators there."

Now hes in some D.O. school, I forgot which.

RYAN, WHERE ARE YOU?!?! IT'S NICK, THE OVERSIZED KOREAN GUY WHO SLEEPS IN LECTURE! 😀

noticed that ppl didnt know about SDN during interviews, funny thing is that a lot of admissions staff mentioned the site.

I would be interested to see the percentage of SDNers that matriculate compared to the national average.

I think most students do know about SDN. One of my students told me about it, actually, and I've told some of my other students about it. It's a really great resource, especially for people who are out of the typical pre-med loop for whatever reason.

i agree w/ VisualHealth. Never in a million years would I have
raised my hand and admitted that i'm a member of a group of
disgruntled medical applicants, students....

they probably put a check next to your name to "watch out
for" 😛

What shirt??? Where do they sell shirts??? I want a shirt!

I'm hoping to translate my SDN notoriety into a stranglehold on power in the real world. :meanie:

We sold a couple of shirts a while back (including the "be the dr your daddy wanted you to marry" one) and we're working on some new ones.

We do have some shirts for sale now at the SDN Swag Shop.

I think we should have another contest. That was actually a lot of fun.

I know our admissions director at USF told us about the site several times, but I had already seen a link on our preprofessional page, which is how I got introduced to the website.

Also, the admissions directors were admitting to me they have been into some of the SDN chats and seen what some people have said about them. No mentioning whom or what though!!!

Not many people know about it at my school. It seems like more people use it at the bigger, more prestigious schools, or at least schools with a lot of pre-meds. Not many people talk about being pre-med at my school, and if they do they aren't very competitive or up on the process. For instance, almost everyone at my school ends up taking the August MCAT. I actually came upon this site when I googled for advice to study for the MCAT. Until then, the best site I had found for pre-med advice was some bootleg group on yahoo that had messages posted like twice a week or something. Needless to say, SDN was a little more impressive.

I went to a big pre-med school and most of my friends were pre-medders...not one of them mentioned it. I suprisingly found out about this on an interview in Iowa...it was a really weird experience

Hmmm, I'll have to revise my hypothesis... 😀

I took a TPR MCAT class that was mostly Penn students and I'm pretty sure I was the only person in the class (~25 people) who had heard of SDN. And the instructors who were med students didn't know it either. One of my friends knows about it but never really looked at it, and the others who are pre-med don't know about it as far as I'm aware. My husband, a first year med student, knows I post on here all the time and sometimes he'll read it but he doesn't have a screen name or anything (of course I usually show him particularly interesting threads so I suppose I sort through it for him in a way 🙂).

I was also surprised when nobody else in my MCAT class knew of the site. I don't think of myself as the overly competitive type, but still a part of me was secretly happy that I had a head up over the others 😛

I think ADCOM members know more about SDN than most pre-meds. I was talking to an ADCOM member about my extracurriculars. I helped start an organization with the website www.StudentDonor.org, and the ADCOM member kept referring to it as StudentDoctor.org. I couldn't help but laugh. I think he has to know that I post here constantly 😀

not many people at my school know about this place. im not sure if i should tell them and make me look like even more of an obsessed pre-med.

I don't believe that for a second. They probably just didn't want to admit it.

Yep, Deny, Deny, Deny...

If that were true they would know more about the process. They were really clueless. If I'd mention something I knew from reading SDN, they would just wonder how I knew that. No, maybe one or two of them knew of SDN, but I'm almost certain that the majority had not.

Amen to that. For "non-trads" like me who never had a premed committee or advisor, this site has truly been a lifesaver. You guys rock.

The best thing about SDN is that it has the "pay it forward" attitude, where everyone helps each other out, passes important information around, shares the karma that favorably touched them. Much of the help or words that I pass on are from elder members of this group. Rock on! 😀

I heard about SDN in my MCAT class, one of the teachers was an MS0, accepted at Temple, waitlisted (or hold listed I suppose, at that point) at Case. He wrote the site on the board and mentioned the interview feedback and different forums. Nobody in the class had ever heard of it before then. I was bored one day and sick of studying so I checked out the forums.

I still regret that day.

Haha! I totally agree. I can't even remember how I heard about SDN. Oh, wait. From my brother - he's an MS1 at Buffalo. Rgh. He should be hurt.

Same here. Classmates ask me questions all the time that are common knowledge to SDNers. They are gunners though and do not help with random questions in classes, assignments and such. So I give them answers they ask (most times) but I do not tell them about this holy temple.

Did you guys know that they sell SDN thongs?? I gotta get one! Can't think of a better way to look sexy for my bf LOL

it's because your classmates didn't want you to find all of the embarrassing posts they'd made on here 😛

I found this board because of lane (he posts mostly in the UTHSCSALMNOP thread).
