SDNers willing to read Personal Statements for the class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi,

Just got more work and will not be able to handle more submissions at this time. Please remove me from the list. I will finish helping those who emailed me already.

Psycho, Phil took care of everything! It's all on the first few posts. We add to the front instead of the back now. Everything is there. 👍
Willing to help even though it is late, just pm me for info

Thanks for adding me to the list. I have some free time this weekend so feel free to send some statements if you wish.

Rocco

anyone willing to read my PS, let me know know so i can PM you my PS.

hey, i'll add my name into the hat in order to help others... with the disclaimer that i'm no better than any other stranger that offers. however, i'm done with the application process so i promise that i'm not fishing for essay ideas.

here's my bio in case it matters:
34 yr old 2nd career student after spending 11 years in aerospace engineering
masters degree
married with child on the way
applied to 10 schools, didn't fill out 4 secondaries and out of the remaining 6 "full" applications i ended up with an acceptance to MCG and waitlists to emory and duke. my mcat is below the average for emroy and duke
i'm a white male

cheers and good luck!
can somebody add me to the master list?

I'm willing to look at it.

Please do not send me any more PSs until I have read through and edited the nine I already have. I can not do justice to any of them when I'm overwhelmed by the mere quantity I have to read. I'll edit this when I'm ready to accept more again. Thanks for your understanding.

You can add me to the list,

BS in bio, minored in English, will be starting osteo school in the fall... PM or email at [email protected] ... for everyone else good luck on your apps!!!

You can add me to the list as well.

24 yo MS2, TA in undergrad, year of lab research, random ECs. PM me if you would like me to read it over.

Hi everyone,

I am very sorry but I am going to have to ask to be removed from the list. My Inbox is now overflowing and I feel I am so far behind on reading the PSs I have now that I cannot accept any new ones. Phil, please take me off the list. I wish everyone the best of luck with their applications. If you have sent me a PS and have not heard from me I hope I will be able to get through the ones remaining in my Inbox by Friday.

All best to everyone! :luck: :luck: :luck:
It was fun!

Edited by Phil Anthropist: no problem PG, I removed your name and description from the master list (page 1, posts 2-6). Thanks for helping your fellow SDNers out! 👍

If anybody reads this far, as opposed to the main list.... I got swamped. Please hold off on requests until later in the first week of July or so??

Edited by Phil Anthropist: I updated your description on the master list--thanks for letting 'em know 👍

I'd like to help out with the personal statements. I have a very good humanities background, even though my major is science related. Plus I have a lot of free time (for now, at least). My e-mail address is neurolemma05@ yahoo.com. Good luck to everyone applying this time around!

Edited by Phil Anthropist: Removed from the master list. This user's SDN account has been deactivated.

I'd be happy to help. I have a degree in journalism from Missouri, and I scored a "T" on the MCAT writing section. Like most Mizzou J-school grads, I'm a bit of a Grammar Nazi 😛 . I was admitted to med school this year. Email addy is markcardinal (at) yahoo.com. Good luck to everyone applying this year!

Edited by Phil Anthropist: I added your name and description to the master list (page 1, posts 2-6). Thanks for helping out!

You can add me to the list. I already submitted my application and have some free time. I have lots of international volunteer experience and focused my ps on unique experiences. You can email it to [email protected] or PM me.

I think it might be worthwhile to add a sticky link to an online copy of Strunk's Elements of Style.
This one? http://www.bartleby.com/141/

I'm not going to make a sticky thread for it, but I could link it from the main post in this thread or on the useful applicant links thread

Adding to the master list (page 1, posts 2-6) : ohlala

Removing from the master list (page 1, posts 2-6) : Neurolemma

Note: I will probably unstick this thread around July 15.

Sorry guys, got swamped...please take me off the list for the time being; I'll reply again if my time opens up again later.

Edited by Phil Anthropist: I removed you from the master list (page 1, posts 2-6). Thanks for helping out!

Hi

I can help read PS's. About me: BS bioengineering and BA cognitive sciences from Rice, very research-heavy background, not-so-hot gpa. Starting MD/PhD in a few weeks. Send them to [email protected] .

Edited by Phil Anthropist: I added your name and description to the master list (Page 1, posts 2-6). Thanks for helping out!

I would be willing to help Ph.D./M.D. applicants write their essays.

Hello! I definately can relate to the agony of trying to perfect that darn AMCAS essay. It's especially difficult after reading your friend's and realizing, "Wow! That's how it's supposed to sound like!" It is especially frustrating if your numbers are below average, but you have lots to offer in other parts of your application, making that essay YOUR time to shine!

Well, I've edited DOZENS of essays over the years, just as a hobby and favor to friends and was getting recommended to pre-meds I didn't even know.

The essays that stand out are the ones that have memorable examples, great poignant sentences and where the paragraphs are so well threaded together you just want to keep reading it. I can help not only with little grammer problems, but with the 'BIG' picture ideas you have in your essay. I've been through the process myself and completed over 30 sendonary essays myself and really ENJOY helping people be really happy w/their essays.

I've decided to put this hidden talent to good CHARITABLE (not personal profit!) use. Please PM if you'd like my help and advice!

Edited by Phil Anthropist: Added to the master list (page 1, posts 2-6)

Please take me off the list for now... busy with packing/moving... will try to help out more once I'm settled in. Thanks!

I will read/send back the ones already sent to me.

Edited by Phil Anthropist: I removed you from the master list (Page 1, Posts 2-6). Thanks for helping out!

you can tack me on the list - I'll read some for a while

Edited by Phil Anthropist: Added to the list. Thanks for helping!

I'm done reading :-( I took on another class, so I'm just too busy these days. The essays that people sent me were really good though, go class of '10!! Anyway, I am still willing to have my own PS available if people want to read samples.

Thanks to the SDNers that helped read others' personal statements. And special thanks to littleroo for starting this thread and assisting me in maintaining the thread. I know many SDNers appreciate your time and effort. 👍 👍

I will continue to make updates to the thread, but at this time I think most of this year's applicants are finished with their personal statements (or close to finishing). I'd also like to make room to sticky threads in the future.

Unsticking. 😉

Literoo or Philanthropist, if you can remove me from the list, I'd appreciate it.

I'm so glad I was able to take part in helping people edit their essays. I hope my revisions helped. I'm starting school soon and I think the AMCAS part is winding down, anywhoo.

I'll finish what PS revisions people have sent me already but anymore from now on, I won't look at.

For the people who have asked for other SDNers to look at their PS (in the future and present), try to think about this service as less as an entitlement and more of someone's willingness to donate their time to helping you out. I've gotten emails from people who have sent me PSes, three times, each time, for someone else. And when I send my revisions back, I never get a response, a thank you, nothing. Some people won't even give me their name and yet I read their PS- which mention their most personal life moments. Some people have sent me the roughest draft of their PS, where after maybe a couple sentences into this PS, I've realized they have spent less than maybe an hour writing it. I'll revisize it anyways but I find it so frustrating to be working with nothing.

If anything, appreciate this service. Be considerate and don't mass send your PS to the list, in hopes you can have everyone look at it. It wastes your time and the other reviewers'. Don't forget to thank your reviewer after he's sent you the revisions (even a small thank you PM can mean something).

Good luck with your application

This deserves to be repeated. It's disappointing to see the sense of entitlement that some users have. I hope more people are appreciative of the help all of you provided.

By request, sticking...again

You procrastinators! 😛

Even though I am in the middle of oodles of secondaries, I wuld be happy to read a couple of personal statements.

Feel free to send me a PM and attach it as a word file.

I am in vacation until Sept 4 so I would love to help people with their personal statement. I am sending mine to a couple of SDNers to be revised as well. I believe in giving back with honesty. I have a dual degree in Biology and Natural Science. Applying for Medical School this year. Please Phil add me to your list. My e-mail address is [email protected]. Hope I can be of help.

Well I just asked a few people with a variety of backgrounds to review my ps so maybe now ill be able to repay the debt. I have a pretty common applicant with a good gpa and mcat but poor extras. I'd be happy to read anyone else's here. Best way would be to email me: [email protected]

I'm preparing my Personal Statement for next year but am willing to read some others and give some feedback. If there's anyone who could read mine as well that'd be a big help too.

It's time for this chica to actually start med school. Can you take me off the list? Thanks!

Sorry, but secondaries are piling up. Can you remove me for now? Thanks!

Can you remove my name as well. Starting second year in about a week.

I know you are all very busy people, but you should consider removing your name if you are not willing/able to help. I emailed about 15 people asking them if they had time to look over my personal statement over a month ago... Only one responded, I emailed him my personal statement and I never heard back from him.

yeh same here,
io emailed mine to aroun ten ppl, and NO ONE got back

There is absolutely no use in having a list of emails of people "willing to read personal statements" if they are going to ignore all the emails they receive. They also ignored all my PMs, regardless of how polite I was.

Edit: Unsticking for now. I may stick the thread after the August MCAT for awhile.

I have just finished writing my personal statement. I am guessing the members willing to read PS in this forum are outdated. Anyone still willing to read mine, please PM me.

I can read some, just PM me.
Good luck, 😎

I tutor English at the university I go to, and I'd be happy to read if anyone still needs it.
