After reading SDN posts, does anyone else ever feel as if they're completely screwed for admissions? And then have to step back, look at statistics through MSAR/websites/etc. and then realize that no, the process isn't as as "omg you screw up once and then you die!" as SDN threads sometimes make you feel?
 
haha YES. actually this process has turned me into a crazy rollercoaster of emotions. one minute i'll be like, "yeah, i'll get in to so many schools!" and then 10 minutes later i'm like, "oh ****, i am going to get rejected everywhere because i did this and this and this and this..."
 
lol i feel the same way i wouldnt worry. I cant stop worrying about it, but i think sdn makes you feel scared as there are so many insane stat people here. I feel like im getting in nowhere, lets hope im wrong!! !:laugh:

STORY OF MY LIFE.

and sometimes i even resort to thinking ridiculous things... like, "hey i think i should take three online summer courses with all my other summer plans so JUST IN CASE schools as for grade updates at my interview, i will have good grades to show them rather than my last mediocre term."

REALLY? it's REALLY going to matter?

I submitted a secondary essay to one of my top choices with three typos in it, I bumbled my way through one of the interviews (the only really bad interview I had), and I fell asleep during the welcome speech from the dean of admissions (and I KNOW that he noticed), and I got accepted. Go figure.

After reading through SDN and about all these amazing volunteer activities everyone has... I am now worried that I'm never going to be able to compete with anyone.

Yeah, as some others have said, discussions here should be taken with a tub-full of salt. As long as you know what you're getting into, you should be ok.👍

i think he/she meant to point out that the OP's use of "itis" doesn't make sense. in which case, omni gets a :lame: from me.

That is true. That use of -itis makes no sense at all. Unless we're talking about inflamed mcat and gpa averages...

Are you kidding? I just changed my whole approach?!?! lol, great story to provide some perspective. I have more blemishes on my record, but feel somewhat confident about my chances. Remember folks, it only takes one "yes."

true...but 30 "no" answers and 12 months of waiting is painful 🙁
 
Two years ago, when I was applying for the first time, I felt the same way. And I got rejected. Now, I pop on to see what's going on on SDN, but don't really care about the judgments. I mean, people look at my MDApps and figure I must've royally screwed up to not get in to any schools, which just makes me realize how little MDApps really tells.

So, basically, I don't care anymore. I'm still doing all I can to turn things in my favor, of course, but I'm no where near as obsessive as some people on here seem. And I get to keep my sanity because of it.
 
I agree that SDNers sometimes overdo it, but having been through the whole cycle, I'd say that SDN is more realistic than not in its portrayal of potential obstacles. I was more than once extremely grateful for the information on SDN and that I had taken seriously many of the warnings that I found here.

The admissions process may not be as bad as your worst fears, but my advice is to prepare as if it is. Chance factors are very much at work in the process, and it will serve you well to give your best effort to every area in which you have some degree of control.

why, because Blue and i take issue with you trying to dismiss med school as trivial? even if it was just a joke (which is what i assumed, hence my "laughter").

I'm not saying it's trivial.

It probably isn't everything you think it is, though.

If you don't get in, is it the end of the world? Not even close. You either reapply or you move on with your life.

Don't let this school stuff define you.

you made a pretty big jump there. how did you gather from my "ha. ha ha. ha." that i thought not getting into med school was the end of the world?

i strongly disagree with your characterization of it as "just medical school." but i also strongly disagree with the people who think their lives end if they don't get in. stop being unnecessarily condescending; it turns out i am mature enough to have a nuanced opinion.

Maybe for you it was. If you look around SDN, though... people get really worked up about this stuff.

It's not the statement itself but the feeling it embodies.

this reminds me of the "urk" thread. why do you care how other people feel about med school? they might be worked up, but you're not. so who cares? it's not your problem.

But that's the thing, everyone has em. It doesn't make you stand out. Many of their essays are nothing special bc they sound generic.

I had almost no (non medical) volunteering. We're talking 8 hours total. No one questioned me about it, I just told the truth, that I am much more interested in research.

Just be comfortable with what you have done, and the confidence should come across in your essays and interviews.

Why do I care? 'cause I'm in med school. Obviously, I "love science and want to help people." :laugh:

Sarcasm? I actually really enjoy it, but not for the reasons I thought I would. Not even close.

I liken it to people who think finishing a marathon or an Ironman is something big... or becoming an elite athlete... or having some school's name next to yours.
