hi,

i am interested in the joint clinical phd program at sdsu/ucsd and i was looking on the program's website for more info about it. there were a few things i was unable to find, so if anyone knows about the program, i'd really appreciate some insight! for instance, is the program funded? it's my understanding that students don't get any breaks because the two schools are on different schedules; is that an issue? are there any other things i should know about the program? thanks in advance!

The program is funded. Most students get about $16,000 a year and a tuition waiver. Everyone I met there was funded through research assistantships, although there are TA spots available if needed. They also have some additional fellowships (e.g. minority fellowship), so there is potential to get a bigger stipend. I don't really remember about the break situation (I interviewed there. I'm not a student.) I think you take classes at both campuses and since SDSU is on semester and UCSD is on quarter, you probably wouldn't get very long breaks. I wouldn't worry too much about that though...you will probably have to work year-round no matter what school you go to (assuming you have are an RA). I was really impressed by the program and the faculty. If you end up applying, I would definitely recommend emailing potential mentors over the summer to find out if they will be taking a student. Since there are so many faculty members, they don't get to take a student every year. There is actually a lottery for which prof's get to take a student, so even if a professor is trying to get a student that year, there are no guarantees.

Keep in mind that you won't be taking classes every year (I finished most my classes by 3rd year), so I wouldn't worry much about that part. Also keep in mind that the JDP is very competitive. They accept rather large classes, but also get a great deal of applications. On the positive side, it's well respected, and has a very diverse number of clinical & research opportunities.

thanks for the replies everyone. there is a professor there who i really want to work with, so i am glad to hear such positive things about the program. i was planning on contacting the prof early fall, but it sounds like i might need to get my foot in the door earlier. thanks again!

I would recommend getting in contact with some of the professors there directly if you haven't already done so.

good luck with your application...as someone mentioned, the JDP is very competitive

I submitted to the JDP in October and was just checking the status of the app and it says they haven't received ANY of my transcripts. I sent them transcripts from all three schools that I attended and have double-checked that I sent them to the right address. I sent my transcripts at different times, including one that was sent well after I already applied... so none of those reasons can really explain it. I'm just freaking out because they're closed today through Friday and the deadline is on Tuesday. Is anyone else having this problem??

I haven't received my notification from them yet either, although I didn't mail out my hardcopy materials until the start of this week. (Yay FedEx!) If some of your transcripts were sent before you did the online application piece, they may be in limbo/delayed, according to the application page:

"One set of official transcripts from each college or university attended; DO NOT send these before you apply to CSU, DO NOT send to the Selection Committee; doing so will delay the application process."

I also noticed a minor difference in address formatting between their PDF instructions and the website instructions:

Well that's the weird part, 2 of my transcripts were sent before I applied (but only a week earlier) and 1 of my transcripts was sent about a week after I applied, and I applied on October 22. So I'm just hoping they haven't updated that section yet or something because the time that I sent it wouldn't explain why they have none of my transcripts. Plus, I would imagine that although there's a slight formatting difference between the two addresses, it would still get to them because all the information is there?? ughh.... so frustrating!

I ran into the same problem. I requested ANOTHER copy of my transcript to be sent via FedEx (even though I already did this over a month ago). Sucks to pay the money, but I've thought of it as a part of the application fee (some programs have more expensive fees anyway).

When checking my app status, I also noticed that the "status date" for my materials was over a week old (mid-November, even though I was logged in just yesterday); so maybe they are behind in updating the site when materials come in. As far as I know they may have it, but they just haven't updated my record.

To reassure you (it helped me), the SDSU/UCSD website specifically states that they understand when a transcript or letter fails to arrive on time ... and that some things are beyond the control of the applicant. I can't imagine they are really strict about these aspects of the application process. better to get your other stuff in on time (application and statement).

I hope that either a) they don't care all that much OR b) my last minute transcript makes it there on time!!!

Finally, this may have been overkill, but I also included a copy of my transcript with my other materials (of course, I hope this doesn't confuse/annoy them, because they don't request it that way); however, I wanted them to have it already!!!

OK, I just checked and it says status date October 24, 2009. I'm just going to assume that they have received everything until I hear otherwise because I have confirmed that all my schools sent the transcripts. I tried to call them this morning, but then I remembered that there's a 3 hour time difference... oops! Anyway, thanks for the reassurance... it helps to know that it's happened to other people too and that they specifically state that they understand if it's late.

I had a couple of questions for them about what GPAs to report (I was on trimesters in college, they ask for semester or quarter GPAs). I've tried calling and sending emails to the selection committee office, but no one has picked up or responded. On their website it even said that they aren't returning out of state calls because of budget cuts! I'm just hoping that they received everything, since two of my recommenders sent their letters separately.

Thankfully, though, when I log in to SDSU it says that they have all of my transcripts and GRE scores. I did notice that they didn't list my psych GRE score. Did they list it on anyone else's?

Just called and they said they have everything! Now I can relax... Although I wish they would either keep the website updated or not have one at all. So stressful!

Were you only able to log in after they sent you the "RedID number?" I think I've only received the first of two confirmation emails (one arrived immediately after I finished the online CSU app.)

I had to email them from my personal account (as opposed to the website form) to get a response a few weeks ago on GPAs (different but similar issue). I think the address started with "PsycJDP".

Did anyone else get this email? So random...

"Subject: SDSU/UCSD JDP in Clinical Psychology

Thank you for applying to our program. We are in the process of opening, sorting, and filing your application. Patience would be appreciated at this time as we have an unusually high amount of mail this season. You will be notified of your status by the end of this week."

I just received it this morning, and it's from a specific person not one of the automatic graduate school emails. Maybe it just means they have forwarded my app to the program? 😕

Yep. That e-mail is coming from the JDP directly, not the grad school. I believe SS is the grad prgm. admin. asst.

Yeah, I got the same email earlier today...I was wondering the same thing?

Quick question... When you go onto CSU Mentor, where can you find whether they have your transcripts and GRE scores. It doesn't show up for me. So, I'm not sure whether they don't have them or I'm just checking the wrong place. Anyone?

Hey all, I just noticed a March 1, 2010 deadline for receipt of the transcripts and GRE Test scores ... maybe they give people extra time for processing those credentials.

To answer your specific question:

1. Use the link provided via the confirmation e-mail: www.sdsu.edu/portal

2. Use the RedID provided via the same confirmation e-mail.

3. Upon logging in, click on admissions status button.

4. Responses appear under these headings: Documents Required For Admission (sub-categories -- Transcipts and Test Scores). Mine has a big red X because a transcript has been received yet 🙁 But there are big green check marks for those items received (GRE scores with the actual scores reported).

Good Luck!

I'm in the same boat with a confirmed GRE and a missing transcript. I wonder if transcripts take longer to be registered in the system, since they're not as uniform as GREs. I only sent mine out ~12 days ago, but it should have arrived after my online application was completed and before their Dec. 1st deadline.

Thanks PsycOut! I was finally able to get on. They also say they don't have my transcripts and when I called they just said to be patient and call next week. Also, my Psyc GRE score does not show up on the website, but after the woman checked, it's there...Strange.. Oh, well, I just can't wait for all my schools to confirm that my apps are complete!

Weren't they supposed to contact us by the end of the week? What's the hold up??? :scared:

I was just thinking that....

I guess it's only 1 pm there so they still have 4 hours until the end of the day 😕

Has anyone else tried to call the JDP program? I've been calling multiple times a day all week and the voicemail box for the person is full!!!! It's the only school that I have no idea about. I don't even have confirmation that they received my supplemental packet!!!

I'm thinking they are dealing with financial crises... will they even have any money to accept new students? i'm only half-joking...

haven't tried calling; but not surprised to hear that the vmx is full. i hope they e-mail us soon!!!

same here...I've called a handful of times since I sent my app...at first, no one would answer the phone and now everytime I call I get that same voicemail message...😕

I got that email last week too, and I haven't heard anything since. Has anyone else?

I've been checking the "Webportal" somewhat regularly (simple confirmation is such a relief). My latest log-in had updated info. (finally), and I now have confirmation that my scores are transcripts have been received. Others may notice this new change as well ... thought I'd share the info.

Has SDSU not receive anyone else's transcripts?

I mailed mines weeks ago, but they have not shown up in the webportal yet. I mailed them express, so I have been able to track their voyage to San Diego. However, I noticed the package arrived at SDSU, but then goes to another completely different postal code to be "sorted". Does anyone have any idea what this means? I tried calling the post office several times, but I have a hard time trying to get a live person.

I am wondering whether there is a postal error or if SDSU is still pocessing things. UUUUGGGGHHHH! This so frustrating. I am starting to settle on the fact that I donated $55 to SDSU for nothing. 😡

I haven't had problems with my transcripts, but I am still yet to get the email from JDP saying that my application is complete. The voicemail box has been full for 2 weeks and I'm kinda feeling the same about having paid my money for nothing! oh well! 🙁

I am having the same issue as you guys... my webportal says that everything is there, except the stuff from my supplemental packet. I think they are probably just processing things still. The UC and CSU system has suffered pretty serious cuts, so they might just be short-handed. But to be fair, it's only been a couple weeks since the deadline, and I'm sure they've received a few hundred apps. So... let's just give 'em a couple more weeks and see what happens.

hi everyone,
sdsu is not responding because they are currently closed, the campus is going to reopen on jan. 5. They have these mandatory furlough days, which are days they are forced to close because of buget cuts, that began this semester.

Hope this helps 🙂

Probably everyone on this list who applied to SDSU/UCSD already got the e-mail that they sent out today, but just incase someone missed it, I received an e-mail notification from Sandy Scott indicating that my application is complete and that they would be reviewing applications this week. Eek!

wow, i've received nothing at all. Hopefully i at least get an email tomorrow!

I also got this email on Jan. 6. Seems like it was a mass email. It also said that people who get interviews will be notified by phone call and that interviews will take place the last Monday and Tuesday of February. So, the 22nd/23rd, I guess.

Hmm... the interview invite thread says somebody was invited by email yesterday. Maybe they just got the mass email and thought it was an interview invite? Wishful thinking...

I've received a snail mail postcard saying they got my application but did not get a mass email on the 6th...I guess I should call because maybe they have a typo for the email address?

Did you get one in December? I got the December email, but not the January email. They might just send it out in waves. I never got a postcard, though, so maybe they do have the wrong email address.

yea I think it was towards the end of December. I always go to call them before work and forget that I'm 3 hours ahead and never reach anybody >.< This will be my task on my lunch break tomorrow
