After reading several posts from other SDNers about the RC section on the DAT, it seems like there are different ways to approach each particular passage in the RC section. In most cases it seems like the 2/3 passages would work using search and destroy where as the 1/3 passages involves several inference/tone question. I wanted to open this thread to all SDNers who have taken the DAT who can advise us to use the S&D method or not on each particular passage. This thread will help DAT takers decipher between which method to use on each particular passage come test day.

i.e

piano -- SD Yes or No?
crocodile -- SD Yes or No?
ethics -- SD Yes or No?

etc... please add to the list.

Thanks in advance!

I'm curious too, but I don't think you're going to get a lot of feedback from people who have actually taken the test...knowing how to go about each passage before getting there kind of gives us an unfair advantage :/

In regards to fairness, of course exact passages and how you should handle them is decided on a person-by-person basis. I'm guessing the answer to our questions just depends on how good of a reader one is. I seem to do fair in the practice tests using it, and if one practices the technique enough you can answer the inference questions last since you've almost read the entire thing from answering the factoid questions. Just my .02 cents :xf:

i don't really think it's really fair that people explain how you should do each passage.

this is an exam. no one should be holding anyone's hand through it

if you get a lot of tone/inference then you have to read it. if you get a lot of direct questions then you can search/destroy. it really depends on the passages.
