I know this is ridiculous, but I can't believe I am having difficulty looking for schools that offer the 2 classes I need to take to fulfill the prereqs for a school. Do you guys know any school in CA (UC, CSU, Extension, CC, privates, etc.) that offers classes titled "Medical Microbiology" and "Bioethics" this summer? I guess it can be out-of-state, if the classes are online.

What school require that? (I'd like to see what they're actually requesting.) Medical microbiology is probably just microbiology. I would suggest taking a specific upper division microbiology course at any university. UCLA and CSULB have microbiology departments, so many electives probably cover it. Bioethics??? I think there's a UCLA course in this for research students. It's upper division in probably MIMG. Like I said, I can't give much better information without checking out the requirements for myself.

This is for University of Mississippi. I took Bacteriology at UCSD and normally this class should fulfill the Microbiology requirement for a majority of schools, but Mississippi doesn't accept it. UCSD does offer Medical Microbiology but they only offer it in the fall and at that time, I didn't know that my Bacteriology class didn't count toward the requirement.

I know another person who tried to use her General Microbiology that she took at her CC, but that didn't work out either. Other than that, I shouldn't have a problem looking for the regular Microbiology class at a CC. I know that CCs offer the regular Ethics class, but not specifically into Bioethics. I just emailed the school regarding this situation, so hopefully I hear something tomorrow.

you can check UCI. i think they have something along the lines of both medical microbiology and or bioethics but i am not too sure. Check it out!

Oh yea, I did but they don't offer them this summer. Well, they only offer General Microbiology. So far, I've checked the UCs, CSUs, CCs, private schools like Chapman, UC Extensions, etc...or whatever I can come up from the top of my head. I then got panicked so that's why I made a thread on here. :scared:

Why do you need that class? I don't see in your signature that you applied to Mississippi school? Also, I don't think any schools will offer these two classes in the summer since few people need those class + budget cut now.

Hey there,

Several UCs offer Medical Microbiology / Immunology major/coursework but it doesn't seem like something you'd just "take" as part of a pre-requisite. It appears as though, for UC Irvine's Medical Microbio class, you must have completed "first term curriculum". I am sure this class would require you to be a matriculated UCI student. Anyway, for your information:

210A Medical Microbiology (4 to 6). Lecture, five hours; laboratory, three
hours. The biology of infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria, fungi,
and parasites, to provide the foundation in microbiology for the subsequent
study of infectious diseases. Lectures, small group sessions with clinicians,
and laboratory sessions are used to teach the molecular bases of microbial
pathogenesis, diagnostic testing, antimicrobial therapy, and prevention strategies.
Prerequisites: first-year curriculum. Graduate students must have
approval of the course director and enroll through the Department of Microbiology
and Molecular Genetics.

I am sure that every UC will have a similar policy. Taking a cursory glance through a random sampling of general catalogs in the Bio Science departments of 5 popular CCs in California, "medical microbiology" doesn't exist.

Bioethics turned up mostly the same stuff. From UCI:

M176 Bioethics (4) S. Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Discusses
the ethical and social responsibilities of the pharmaceutical scientist and
entrepreneur. Issues explored include animal experimentation, clinical trials,
medicine, and economics as they are related to pharmaceutical sciences and
drug discovery and development.

An interesting note is that this is offered through a program called the Degree of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

UC Davis also offers Bioethics as a program of study through their medical school (As well as Med. Micro.)

But again, in terms of CCs/online courses (Kaplan, Walden, UoPhoenix, Capella, etc) you look to be out of luck.

Have you considered a post-bacc program like the one UCSF and UCD offer? These are year-long courses though and very competitive, and I doubt they'd be very useful to you if you only require Bioethics and Med. Micro.

I see that you did say where you applied to... Might I suggest you call their admissions officer(s) and ask what classes, if any, can be of use to fulfill their pre-requisites. Perhaps Mississippi has different wording for classes? It's possible.

Good luck and I hope I could help.

Thanks for your input everyone! Yea, I'm aware that I have to be a matriculated UCI student in order to sign up for those classes. However, I thought that anyone can sign up for classes at any UC/CSU in the summer time only.

The school is strict on accepting certain classes, so it has to say "Medical Microbiology" and "Bioethics". This means that "General Microbiology" and plain "Ethics" won't do. I'll keep looking...

Oh, you are referring to "open campus" - Indeed, you certainly can! I am taking an open campus Biology course this summer at UC Davis. However, very specific classes that are offered an adjunct of the institution's School of Medicine, like Medical micro is, are definitely not offered (and probably wouldn't be open to an open campus student).

Let us know when you find something though, so we all can learn the answer to maybe help someone else down the road.
