Students often ask what they should do in a second gap year before applying to dental school.

If you’re deciding between taking more classes or getting clinical experience, I’d strongly suggest choosing clinical. Working full-time as a dental assistant not only gives you valuable hands-on experience but also provides great material for your essays and interviews. It’s something admissions committees appreciate and respect.

You can always use that time to prepare for a DAT retake — even modest score improvements can make a bigger impact than a small GPA increase. Biology carries a lot of weight in the Total Science score since it’s the largest section, and as Dr. Romano always says, mastering those concepts early can lift your entire performance.

The PAT is important, but most schools care more about your Academic Average and Total Science, so focus on what moves the needle most.

Hope this helps,
Nancy
